Sermon 11-13-11 thanksgiving – for the power to change
John 1:1-12 KJV
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2The same was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. 6There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
8He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. 10He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
Power for evil and good in the penn state story
Power is important – riding on bud’s boat
Power in faith – sit around, going thru the motions
The story of the firestarter- they had the implements but not the power
Denying the power there of
2 timothy 3
1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.
What is Christianity about
Who is this jesus?
Look at jn 1
He is the life. He is the light. To as many received him, he gives the power to become
I am thankful for the power to change
Sometimes change is gradual
15 year battle with something
7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
Keep asking keep seeking, keep knocking
Sometimes change can happen in a moment,
But, it can happen
To stop an old one
To start a new one
For the power to become

Have you settled into a trajectory of life that has lost the ability to become?
Have you given into negativity and despair
Have you put your family in jeopardy
Maybe its time to get ahold of God and wrestle into the night and do not let go
To those who believe on his name his give the power to become
I am thankful for the power to change
