Communion Mediation 7-9-95

Communion Meditation 7-9-95 1 Peter 1:17-19

A Father acts impartially
giving the children what they need, whether they deserve it or not
my Dad: vacations....new stuff....in ground pool in backyard
I am proud of my Dad....pulling like a trooper in mom's illness

God, our heavenly father acts impartially, too
gives us what we need whether we deserve it or not
We had.have a need
a great gulf exists between God and man.....needs to be spanned
life without God.....empty, barren

Redemption not done with perishable things
Not done by the religions of me
no moral code can span the gap

We have been redeemed by the precious blood of Christ
given freely
gruesome....senseless.....yet it is the way that God chose to act
the innocent of the guilty
We are redeemed not
because Jesus was a nice guy, tho he was
not because Jesus taught a code of ethics, tho he did
not by following his example, tho we should
but because he is the perfect lamb, w/o spot or blemish....God's sacrifice on your behalf

Salvation, right standing with God is a gift....brought to you by God, thru the blood of Christ
there is power in the blood of Jesus Christ

Romans 1:16
I am not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation
for everyone who believeth

Lake Creek Camp Meeting Acts 17:16-34 8-12-95

Lake Creek Camp Meeting Acts 17:16-34

Paul was burdened that the people were so given to idols.

Why do we assemble? Does any real change ever take place? Yes it does -- but not often enough.

Want to hear from Paul...what do you got to say? Modern philosophies....the things we Christians spend our time worrying about.

Paul has a message...the unknown God.

Gospel story...Jesus Christ.

Not a God of idols...gold silver stone things of mans device.

He used to put up with that junk...but now He commands all to repent, for there will be judgment. We're not going to be here forever.

But to those who put their trust in Him, He offers an assurance -- Assurance of Faith.

Problems of guilt vs conviction. Many run around in labor of guilt. This is not of God. When the Holy Spirit convicts, you find a way out.

Is it well with your soul? How long has it been?

Scout Sunday 1 Corinthians 13 2-12-95

Scout Sunday 1 Cor 13

Prologue...I'm in a quandary. Series on Mark, Scouts present, Valentine's Day, want to inspire, what to do?

Tell this story:
It was...well...a dark and stormy night. Thunder echoed from mountain to marsh as sheets of rain descended on the sleepy village of Saint Horribleburg. A flock of bats flapped into the gloom; the red eyes of unknown creatures glowed in the darkness. But the most frightening sight of all stood miles past the burghermeister's cottage at the edge of town, high on the brink of a forbidding cliff.
It was a castle--a castle whose cold, gray stones flashed white with each explosion of lightning. It was...the Castle Van Gelical!
Somewhere a wolf--or something--howled. Chains rattled, trees shivered, and even the wind seemed to moan over what was about to happen.
Inside the castle dungeon, an eerie light began to glow. A long, bony hand adjusted the flame of an oil lamp. The glow increased, dimly revealing a profusion of bottles, flasks, test tubes and retorts that bubbled foul liquids over Bunsen burners. An odor of madness seemed to hang in the air, because this -- this was the laboratory of the maddest scientist of them all. This was the laboratory of the infamous Dr. Emil Van Gelical!
A rat scrabbled across the granite floor as a gaunt figure stepped into the light. It was Dr. Van Gelical himself, wearing a once-white laboratory coat now stained with the evidence of his notorious experiments. His cheek twitched; his wide eyes gleamed as he gazed at the sheet-covered table in the center of the room.
Under the sheet lay a human form. Or was it human? The crazed surgeon seemed to contemplate that question as he approached the table, rubbing his hands together, his mouth awry with a twisted grin.
Suddenly he turned toward the door. "Igor!" he shouted. "Come quickly. There is much work to be done!"
Irregular footsteps descended the dungeon staircase. In moments a shuffling, hunchbacked ragbag of an assistant appeared, carrying a candelabrum and a large cardboard box.
"Yes, master," Igor replied, groveling. "Here are the materials you ordered. All is in readiness!"
"Good, good," the doctor breathed. "Bring the materials to the table, Igor. It is time to begin...the experiment!"
The crash of a thunderbolt was heard as Igor dragged his box to the side of the table. "I love experiments, master," he said, fawning. "Even though the villagers say you are crazy---"
The doctor whirled. "Crazy, am I?" he bellowed, his cheek twitching furiously. "I'll show them who's crazy. Those fools in the village, calling me mad -- how dare they? I'll show them -- I'll show them all! I'll --"
"Of course you will, master," Igor soothed, bowing deeply. "Everyone knows you are a genius. The name of Van Gelical is known throughout the district, throughout the province --"
"And soon throughout the world!" the doctor declared.
"Yes, master," said Igor. "Perhaps your fame would have spread sooner if you hadn't borrowed the burghermeister's cerebellum before he was finished with it --"
"Silence!" shouted the doctor, glowering at his assistant. "That was a trivial matter, Igor, and one soon to be forgotten. For tonight I will conduct the greatest experiment of my career. Tonight will be.....my ultimate triumph!"
"Oooh," Igor murmered. "I love triumphs!"
The doctor raised his fist heavenward. "I am going to achieve what no man has done before," he announced. "Tonight I create ..... spiritual life!"
Barooom, roared the thunder. Igor cringed. Flashes of lightning illumined the doctor's wild and slightly crossed eyes. "This is my finest hour, Igor," he cried over the din of the storm. "For tonight I create ..... Christianstein!"
A deafening thunderclap rocked the dungeon. Igor swallowed. "C-C-Christianstein?" He repeated.
"Yes, Igor," the doctor hissed, grasping his assistant's misshapen shoulders. "They call me a madman, an evil genius, a tamperer with nature. But tonight I will prove them wrong. Christianstein will be the greatest specimen of spiritual life the world has ever known! He'll have everything, Igor. Everything!
Igor nodded vigorously. The doctor drew back. "Very well, Igor," he said. "Let the operation begin!"
"I love operations," Igor said, positioning himself at his master's side. He gasped as the doctor pulled the sheet from the table, uncovering the inanimate form of a young man who was dressed in a white shirt, gray tie, and blue polyester suit.
"The moment has come," the doctor intoned. "Give me my surgical gloves."
"Yes, master," Igor said and complied.
"Scalpel," came the next command. Again the assistant did as he was told. In rapid succession the forceps, sponges, clamps and tubes followed. At length the perspiring doctor took a deep breath and consulted a clipboard; it was time to equip his creation.
"Give me the voice of a great evangelist, Igor!" he ordered.
"Yes, master," Igor replied and handed him a jar from the box.
"The courage of Stephen!" came the next instruction. Igor produced a dusty vial.
"The patience of Job!" the doctor commanded and was rewarded with an ancient-looking flask.
After what seemed like hours, the doctor straightened from his labors. "Now, the hypodermic," he ordered, "and the serums I distilled."
Igor's hands trembled as he presented a long, steel syringe. From the box he brought a tray of bottles filled with weirdly colored fluids.
"Double doses of daily prayer and Bible reading," the surgeon murmered, withdrawing liquid from one of the bottles and injecting it into the lifeless figure's arm. "Then faithful church attendance...generous giving...temperance...volunteer work...ability to resist temptation...witnessing..." He paused, then filled the syringe with fluid from the final container. "And last -- but not least -- a triple injection of.....orthodoxy!"
Thunder boomed again as the doctor reread his clipboard list. "Examine the box, Igor," he said. "Have we forgotten anything?"
"Oh, no, master," his assistant answered, turning the carton upside down and shaking it. "Everything must be in place!"
"Excellent!" the doctor cried, yanking off his rubber gloves and fastening a pair of power cables to his creation's neck. "This is the moment the world has waited for. This is the moment for...Christianstein!"
He dashed to the nearest wall, where an electrical control panel waited. "A million volts of lightning will bring my creation to life," he declared. "Now stand back, while I throw the power switch...and prepare to meet the perfect Christian -- Christianstein!"
Igor covered his eyes with his hands. With a flourish the doctor threw the massive switch from OFF to ON as an avalanche of thunder shook the castle. Lightning burst around them like a thousand suns; showers of sparks cascaded from the control panel as raw energy surged through the wires.
Smoke began to rise from the form on the table. Igor coughed, waving the fumes away. When they cleared, he beheld a heart-stopping sight.
The figure was quivering.
"Doctor!" Igor shouted. "He -- he's moving!"
The surgeon rushed to see the figure raise its hand. "Yes, Igor, yes!" he cried. "My creation is -- alive!"
Master and servant watched breathlessly as the thing called Christianstein slowly pulled itself to a sitting position. Then, stiffly, it climbed from the table and stood to its full height.
"Oooh," Igor breathed. "You've done it, master! He's perfect -- the perfect Christian!"
"Oh, my creation," the doctor said, transfixed. "Speak to me!"
The figure looked down at the doctor and frowned. At last it began to speak -- in a low and hostile growl:
"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love..."
"Love?" said the doctor, scanning his clipboard with puzzlement.
Slowly the creature raised its arms in the direction of the doctor, who continued to consult his list. "If I have the gift of prophecy," it growled, "and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love..."
"Love?" the doctor said impatiently. "Igor, what is he talking about?"
"I -- I don't know, master," Igor answered, dropping to his knees and hiding under the table.
"If I give all I possess to the poor," the creature said, his voice building to a roar, "and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love..." Suddenly he grabbed the doctor's laboratory coat and lifted him off the floor. "I...gain...nothing!"
The doctor gulped. "N-nothing?" he repeated. "N-not even a little something?"
"Aaarrggghhh!" the creature bellowed, dropping the doctor and reaching for his throat.
"Igor, you fool!" the doctor shouted, stumbling backward and scrambling for the door. "I knew we'd left something out!" He clambered up the stairs as his creation lumbered after him. "Such a little thing," the doctor cried, his voice fading into the distance.
Several minutes passed before Igor could find the courage to move. Slowly he looked out from under the table -- first one way, then the other. Finally he spoke.
"I--I think we've created a monster," he whispered.
Somewhere a wolf -- or something -- howled.

Love is the ultimate thing that matters...God is love. If you provide your kids a car at age 16 -- so what? without love. If you buy everything for your spouse, if you spoil the grandkids, if you hire people in your business, if you leave money to the church in your will.....................

It Is A Good Thing Philippians 1 6-26-95

It Is A Good Thing -- Phil 1

We live in a world of violence, anger and disrespect. A world greatly void of love. Softball player screamed going down the first base line.

I am reading this section, this past week, the thought occurs -- this is for Sunday. If you are here and have trouble with this, you probably need to hear it.

Paul is in prison...near the end of his life, writing to one of the churches he started.

Grace and peace unto you.

I thank God for you with joy in my heart. Because of our partnership in the gospel. New members from among your friends, welcoming congregation. You have become our friends.

He who began a good work in you...God is doing a work in this church. Past...present...future.

I love you...God is my witness.

My hope and prayer for you is that: You may grow. Prove what is right. That God may be glorified.

Dear Lord, let them know that they are loved.

My Grace Is Sufficient For You 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 10-29-95

My Grace Is Sufficient For You 2 Corinthians 12:7-10

Paul.....blessed with revelations, dreams, displays of God's power, etc. Jesus appeared to him, spoke/saw healings/wrote scriptures/jail opened. Thorn in the flesh.....eyes, hunchback, speech, accusations of false apostles. Jesus had some literal thorns in his flesh...yet like a sheep that is led to the slaughter, is silent. He opened not his mouth...the purpose of God is the most important thing in life. God works to keep us humble, so that we do not forget who life is about.

Messenger of Satan...ref to Job.

I prayed 3 times. Prayer is the great consolation for the soul. Pray not only for the removal of the affliction, but that God would work his purpose thru it. We pray about things often...rarely about God. We bargain, cajole, throw down the gauntlet. We become victims...children...we want what we want when we want it. God answered the prayer...no. We whine that God won't answer our prayers...maybe he already has...with a no.

That's the bad news...this is the good news. My grace is enough -- it is sufficient. Grace is not always Miracleville...it is not Fantasy Island. Grace..."good will of God toward us. Enough to enlighten and enliven us, sufficient to strengthen and comfort us, to support our souls and cheer up our spirits in all afflictions and distress."

Mark Twain -- "I have worried about many calamities in my life. But I have dealt with very few." Do not get lost in being a victim. Do not let trouble get you down.

When we are weak, then He can be strong. Only when we are weak, then He can be strong. Focus on the strength of the Lord...He will pull you through. "When we are weak in ourselves, then we are strong in the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we see ourselves weak in ourselves, then we go out of ourselves to Christ, and receive strength from Him.

Story of the judge and the convict at the altar rail. Grace lifts us up and changes our circumstances. Grace also humbles us so that we can rely on God instead of ourselves.

For those who do not believe, no miracle is enough. For those who do believe, no miracle is necessary. It may not be what we want or expect, but in God's grace there is always a miracle.

Let us seek and receive the grace and strength of the Lord. Let us focus on the person and purpose of God...and rise above our circumstances.

We Care Sunday Matthew 19:15-17 10-22-95

We Care Sunday Matthew 19:15-17

The movie hook.....Peter Pan and the Lost Boys.....Lost Boys grow up to be Lost Men.

Alli lost at school on Grandparents Day.

It was about 3 weeks ago...7:30 phone rings...Danny McMurtrey...paramedics...driving to the hospital...too long of a drive to the hospital. O God, no. Don't let this happen. Sorry prayers these are.

I used to be a kid...how do you describe what it was like when I was a kid? When I was 3, (mud & cockleburr story...Mom & McDonalds guy). Sometimes I still want to be a kid.

Last night I had a dream...I missed an old friend...I wanted to cry...I wanted my momma.

There is still a kid inside of each of us...there just aren't enough parents to go around.

Alli & Jenny & Scott are my kids...Danny is my kid too. So is Austin Boehm, Emily Carpenter, ..., ..., ..., Barb Fuelberth, Bob Lee, and Lou Graff. They are all my kids. And they are all your kids. God gave them to us, so that we could help take care of them. We are all their fathers, and their mothers. And they are all my fathers and mothers.

God gave us to each other so that we could find the way. So that we could enjoy the gift of life. So that we could pick the cockleburrs out of each other. God gave us to each other so that little kids everywhere, even the ones in old bodies, would know that they are loved.

We Care kids. I see them in the halls. I say hello. When they ask, I give them gumballs. When they ask, I give them a hug. Sometimes I tell them to stop running. Don't try to turn every single into a double. What a wonderful thing, this community of faith. We care about each other. We see the burning need for love, and we give it. We will never be alone, as long as we remember that God has given us to each other.

Jesus said, "Suffer the little ones to come unto me, and forbid them not." What a great idea. What a needed thing. Let us never forget that.

All people are God's people. There is something good, something worth loving, in everyone. We must take care of our children. There is a little child within all of us.

It is the only way to think and live. It is the right way. It is God's way.
Amen

Sermon on the Pigs Mark 5:1-20 9-24-95

Sermon on the Pigs 9-24-95 Mark 5:1-20

This story has it all....
Good, evil, Jesus, people & pigs
Cast of Characters
the evil are the demons.....legions of them
Jesus is Jesus
The good is the demoniac....vexed, yet a valued human being
The people are people.....wag your heads....go figure
The pigs.....what can we say?

Pigs are valuable.....one cow, one calf. one pig, 12 piglets
you may not make a fortune, but you can feed your family.
Jesus comes, as he always does, to do a good thing.
Evil, no matter the size or shape, cannot stand up in his presence.
And regarding the good, those who see Him for what he is, well, people are just drawn to him
So were the disciples, so was the demoniac.
But not the people who owned the pigs.
They had their life. It wasn't perfect. but it was theirs..they were accustomed to it.
They were comfortable. They had a nut case in the cave, and they had their pigs.
Jesus came, and everything was fine, until he started to change their lives.
demons gone, pigs gone, Jesus please leave.
What is our relationship with Jesus like? glad to have him as long as he let
everything along? but don't be meddling with my life...don't be asking me to change

Dick Burnett....trying to replace your God with my God
very tough proposition.
What is the shape of your God....was Jesus white?
one person's God is filled with judgement and finding fault
another person's God is filled with love for all, with no standards required
yet another's God is filled with love & forgiveness for them, and judgement for all else
and the list goes on and on.
What is the shape of your God?

God is God.....he is who he is
If God is a circle....and you think he is a triangle,
He doesn't become a triangle just to accommodate your way of thinking.

Bring it home
Your demons do not matter....they can go.
Your pigs do not matter either....they can go.
But friends there is one pulling up in a boat that does matter....His name is Jesus Christ.

Don't ask him to go away because he makes you feel uncomfortable
Don't ask him to go away because he asks you to change

He is working for the good. Somehow, even without your demons and your pigs
your life will be better
So be brave....Let him in, let him stay. Let him do his work Amen

But....I could never do that Matthew 11:15-30 10-8-95

But....I could never do that 10-8-95 Matt. 11:15-30

Song "He will lead his flock like a shepherd"

Laurel & Hardy take the piano up the Alps....
they are not just in troubled circumstances, they are trouble people
We are not just unhappy in employment, relationships & situations
I fear that we are unhappy in the root of our souls

Some folks have never know the love
some folks have forgotten what they knew.....
the cares of life, circumstances will wear away at the truth that you have known

God sends us what we need, but we will not do it
"I could never do that"
If Jesus was coming to your town....would he come to your house or
would you have to get up, get dressed, walk 5 miles, and wait in line?
"I could never do that"

God is working to speak to you.....to embrace you
thru a quiet time along in the sanctuary....."but...I could never do that"
thru a sunset......."but.....I could never do that"
thru the beauty of a redwood forest....."but ....I could never do that"
thru a candid talk with a friend......:but....I could never do that."
thru a book read......"but....I could never do that"
thru a worship service....."but....I could never do that"
thru a pointed talk with a professional counselor....."but....I could never do that"
And we wonder why we are burdened, hurting and lost

We need to get past being those who are embarrassment, past our pride
past the scurry....even in the name of God
and become those who will do what ever it takes to leave our dysfunction and come to Jesus
we must do what it takes to truly become pilgrims, seekers, disciples

There is a shepherd....he will lead us....he will heal us
but we must come to him
we must do the things we have not done....break out of our traditions
we must throw ourselves entirely upon him
and then we will find rest for our souls

Getting Pounded On Luke 4 1-15-95

Getting Pounded On 1-15-95 Luke 4 Temptations of Jesus

Martin Luther King, Jr.
Man like all of us.....faced largest evil/temptation of the day
I have a dream
Would we all stand so boldly in the face of temptation?

After Jesus was baptized by John
Led by spirit into wilderness
fasted 40 days, tempted by devil

Turn these stones into bread
temptation hits us where it hurts
using things around you for personal gain
using authority for personal gain

Bow down and worship me
worship things over worship of God

Throw self down from pinnacle of temple
tempting God
Reversal.....we get our selves into trouble then demand that God fix it

Devil left him until an opportune time.
so it is and always will be

Football games today....let's take score
start with three, subtract one for every place you fall

Start to feel pounded on....like you need help
feel it enough....maybe we will feel like we need a savior
Thank God, he has provided a savior in Jesus

Bad news is.....temptation is strong
Good news is God is still present, and his arms of love encompass his children

It's not Just for Ministers 1-22-95 Matt. 4:18-22

2 guys lived on Lake Drive....fished off their pontoon boat every day
couldn't get them to church, but they'd get up to fish
Jesus called
knew them from before
1. come and follow me
this throws a loop for some.....don't want to follow anyone
2. I will make you to be fishers of men
here is where we bail out in large numbers

can't get to second without doing the first
don't want to force folks onto the hook
do we catch fish with Bible??? Do we jump in and get them???

how did Jesus do it????
relaxed....
took several tries...
I have something that you need

so many lack a great purpose in their life...
struggle in understanding faith as something that is just for themselves
faith is not just for you.....just for me....

each of us must fish if the catch is going to be brought in
ministry in your sphere of influence....
your territorial waters.
If you don't do it, it won't get done

But....But....But....
I'm just.....I;m just
Running from the call of God
abrogating responsibility as a Christian

Airline Captain....follows in father's footsteps....dresses the part....can't fly the plane
{passenger.....I wanna go.....I wanna see the vacation land}
Learn to Fish or cut bait

It's time to listen again.....to spirit
hear him
where is God calling to go? to do? to be?
just to ask the question will change your life
implied reliance

go into song.... One more chance

Important Teachings.....I tell you who will hear me....not everyone hears
What is really important in this life???

Jews fixated on OT concept....eye for eye
Jesus reminds them.....love their enemies

Turn the other cheek.....come and slap me
Do not take offense at the wrongs they do to you
who are you anyway, someone who can never be wrong?
difficulty will come to you , but we do not embrace it by being difficult ourselves

If you love only those who love you, what good is that?
people of character win even their enemies

If someone asks for your cloak, give him also your tunic
jacket....tie...shirt
Does it mean exactly what it says????
give me your house.....your car....your pants
maybe its an illustration about things.....
things are not the most important part of life.....people are.

Human existence is a miracle.....
body is a miracle
body of clay combined with a spirit
day will come when the body fails....only the spirit is left

these around you are not merely people, they are spirit beings
deserving of your love & compassion

love your enemies... do good to those who hurt you
live not in the plane of the flesh, but strive to live in the world of the spirit

then your reward will be great, and you will be called sons of he most high God
Amen

Doing the Job Mark 13:32-37 8-20-95

doing the Job 8-20-95 Mark 13:32-37

This is the kind of topic in which we will not be blessed unless the Holy Spirit blesses it
most everyone likes to lay on the beach and bask in the sun
fewer of us enjoy the kind of work that it takes to be able to do so the rewards are not realized without the work involved.

the kingdom of God is like a man who went on a journey
life is like this....and God's world is like this too
we are assigned tasks....assigned tasks by God....how well are we doing?
have we forgotten that we are only guests in the Master's house
do we think that we have no tasks?

There are a variety of tasks in life, but I must speak of the church
missions....youth....children....Sunday school....worship....fellowship....choirs....on and on
new folds....need more than Sunday morning worship
is God's church a place where we only come to be blessed?
is it not a vineyard in which we all should work

1996 nominations forms....

you don't wait around for a light to shine and a voice to speak to you

now we come to the excuses
I didn't understand what you wanted me to do
I was not equipped to do the job......I was basking on the beach

I didn't care that much about your tasks
I've never done anything like that before
