Journey to the Cross-Temptations Luke 4:1-13 2-17-2013

Sermon 2-17-13 journey to the cross – temptations  Luke 4:1-13 9=

4 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert, 2 where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” 4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone.’[a]5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 So if you worship me, it will all be yours.”8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’[b]9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:“‘He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully;11 they will lift you up in their hands,so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[c]12 Jesus answered, “It says: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[d]
13 When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.

Lent begins.  40 days between ash wed and easter.  Sundays not included
An opportunity for us to consider the suffering of Christ.

After his baptism……..jesus is tempted………then he begins his ministry
sometimes good things come after, because of, difficult times
sometimes there is good that would never have come without the times of pain and struggle

3 Temptations of Jesus

1.   Bread into stones – 40 day fast, he is hungry
Scripture - Man shall not live by bread alone
Man should not be controlled by his passions
Deut 8- not earthly bread, but manna.  Trusting God element

2.   Throw yourself down from the pinnacle of the temple
Don’t put the lord to the test [as you did at Massah] ex 17
Grumbling over water.  Did not trust

3.   Bow down and worship me for all the kingdoms
Worship the Lord only ,  him only shall thou serve– deut 6
God alone is to be honored, leaned into by us, in this life

Temptations of us
What are our primary temptations? My list

·        To covet.  To want more.
·        To want it to go our way. Don’t challenge me.  I want to be in charge.
·        To want the easy way
·        To quit, to give up, to wallow, to worry
·        To hurt back
·        To cheat, to take the easy way
·        To demean others, to brag, my dog is bigger than your dog

It seems that it all boils down to what we want.
I am the center of it
Coveting.  Wanting things and wanting things to go our way.
That is one of the top ten.

I think all of the top ten are about wanting what we shouldn’t
Exodus 20
1.    Thou shalt have no other Gods before me
[we want to be God, we want to be in charge]
2.   Don’t make any idols, no images
[we want a God that we can understand and control]
3.   Don’t take the Lords name in vain
[we want everything to go our way.  -no constraints on our behavior]
4.   Remember the Sabbath day
[what do you want to do on Sunday besides honor God]
5.   Honor your father and mother
[we want to honor ourselves]
6.   Thou shall not kill
[I want something so badly that I would harm another]
7.   Thou shall not commit adultery
[wanting someone else’s spouse]
8.   Thou shall not steal
[wanting anything]
9.   Thou shall not bear false witness
[I want something, not sure what.  There is something to be gained from my lying]
10.               Thou shall not covet
“You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's.”

How do we deal with temptation
Willpower my help but willpower is often not enough.

The spirit wars against the flesh.  You can never win the battle.

There is only one way and it has been shown to be the only successful way
To throw one’s self upon god – for this we are created.
To trust him.  to lean into him.
We were so designed.

To throw ones self on God
Is To believe in a higher power
Higher power is a 12 step program term
Some Christians don’t like it….
Sounds funny to Christians but many Christian’s gods are not higher powers, but weak gods of our creations weak gods that we try to control with more prayers

What if your god really is a higher power
·        You can rely on him
·        You can trust him
·        You can talk to him
·        You can lean into him
·        He can help you in your time of need and in your weakness

Temptation is fought on two fronts – fighting and resting
First - Fight temptation
·        Don’t put yourself in a position to be tempted
·        Just say no
·        Jerry alyea…….lay down until the feeling goes away.
·        Remove yourself from harms way
·        Establish new habits

Second - Resting on God
Throw yourself upon God.
Keep after it.
Come to believe and understand that for this you were created.

Conclusion
By nature we want stuff………more and more

A friend asked me the other day how to know when to help others.
There are two extremes here,
To do nothing, and to give it all away.
and the answer is somewhere in between but it can be hard to find.
As we are tempted to temptation to make life all about me
I recommend
1.   Determine to live a generous life
2.   Posture yourself as someone that is going to ask God about everything, every time you can
3.   Then listen to what you hear
4.   Follow it.

We were created to want God.  To walk with him
when our life is submitted to him.
When our wants are turned towards him first, life usually works out better for us

After his baptism……..jesus is tempted………then he begins his ministry

Sometimes good things come after times of suffering.
Sometimes we never learn to love him, until we have loved lots of other things
We may not learn to control temptations until we have had those “out of control moments”
God is not offended by this
But he is constantly seeking us, inviting us to live with him,
for which we were created.

Lent 3 Temptation 1 Corinthians 10:12-13

Sermon 3-27-11 Lent 3 - temptation 1 cor 10:12-13 = =
12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation[c] has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted[d] beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted,[e] he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

Temptations – Jesus resisted temptation – lent is a good time for us to

Story of gods relationship w man does not begin w sin, but w love

The msg today is not about who much we are all great sinners.
It is about temptations that are real and what we can do to over come them and live as God intended us to live.

Problem of temptation is real
Only a relationship with God can fill the mystery of life
When we try to fill this other ways, we end up broken, and in sin

source of temptations
first important step is to take responsibility for your sin, and temptation

flip Wilson- the devil made me do it.

1 peter 5:8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith

natural part of human living – Paul - spirit wars vs the flesh

James 1:13-14 we are drawn aside by our own lusts and tempted
13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.

What are some of the big ones
Trying to fill the need with that which will not satisfy
Life a house w many rooms, be careful in kitchen – u will get burned

Shopping – kohls
if the definition of sin is sep from God, what separates you
if it doesn’t separate you, don’t worry about it [fight inappropriate guilt]
only you know if it is sin to you, but you do know.

Sexuality – a blessing
Infidelity -pornography
Addiction- Drinking- drugs - Eating
Love of money – stealing, cheating, your employer, the government

Ultimately temptation and sin is all about pride
Its about me- envy coveting pride
No one questions me
I will do what I want
It is my money,
It is my life

1 peter 5:5 in the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”[a] 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Why is God against this stuff?

1. god is not the cosmic killjoy he wants to save us from the pain

Paul Harvey tells an incredible story describing how Eskimos kill a wolf simply by coating several layers of frozen blood on a sharp knife sticking out of the frozen tundra. Apparently the wolf picks up the scent, and after circling the knife warily begins licking the frozen blood. He begins to lick faster and faster as the desire for blood literally drives the wolf wild. So great becomes his craving that the wolf never notices the sting of the sharp blade on his tongue as the blood being consumed gradually becomes his own. Morning finds the wolf lying dead in the snow.

2. it is bad for us -
succumbing to temptation leads to brokenness and guilt

3. sin is the great deceiver- always promises what it cannot deliver
you thought this was cool, but now you see it hurts

the farmer who picks up the snake – you knew what I was when you picked me up

God will make a way for you to get out of it
Do not judge those who are struggling w something
there are three things we do not know:
1. First, we do not know how hard he or she tried not to sin.
2. we don’t know the power of the forces that assailed him or her.
3. we don’t know what we would have done in the same circumstances.

God will make a way for you to get out of it
You do not have to succumb habitually

fight temptations
Put your mind somewhere else
Make good choices
avoid compromising situations
Don’t put yourself in positions of temptation

stay connected to Christian friends
find new friends

pray read scriptures [find words of hope]
Jesus is tempted in the wilderness Mt 4 - how did he counter? by the word

Call upon the name of the Lord for strength
take it to Jesus cast your cares upon him for he cares for
1 peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

lord give me strength

conclusion
2 cor 12:8-10 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Paul had a thorn in the flesh-
three times he prayed for it to go away
my strength is made perfect in weakness

what is your weakness
Stay out of the kitchen and spend more time in the chapel
What is your weakness – it is also the thing that drives you toward God

12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation[c] has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted[d] beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted,[e] he will also provide a way out so that you can endur

Getting Pounded On Luke 4 1-15-95

Getting Pounded On 1-15-95 Luke 4 Temptations of Jesus

Martin Luther King, Jr.
Man like all of us.....faced largest evil/temptation of the day
I have a dream
Would we all stand so boldly in the face of temptation?

After Jesus was baptized by John
Led by spirit into wilderness
fasted 40 days, tempted by devil

Turn these stones into bread
temptation hits us where it hurts
using things around you for personal gain
using authority for personal gain

Bow down and worship me
worship things over worship of God

Throw self down from pinnacle of temple
tempting God
Reversal.....we get our selves into trouble then demand that God fix it

Devil left him until an opportune time.
so it is and always will be

Football games today....let's take score
start with three, subtract one for every place you fall

Start to feel pounded on....like you need help
feel it enough....maybe we will feel like we need a savior
Thank God, he has provided a savior in Jesus

Bad news is.....temptation is strong
Good news is God is still present, and his arms of love encompass his children

Three Temptations Matthew 4:1-3

Matthew 4:1-

three temptations

1. turn bread into stones
using you power for your own benefit
using power for your own lusts
vs
using power to glorify god
using power to do good unto others

2. jump from the high place
this only pertains to Jesus
this pertains to all of us
dont try to control God
ways we try to control God
prayer
anger
doctrine

3. bow down and worship me
well, what do you worship
many choices, only one God

Jesus is the cornerstone

Facing Temptations Matthew 3:16 4:1-11 1-13-02

Sermon 1-13-02 Matthew 3:16--4:1-11 Facing Temptations

Have you ever been tempted to do something that you shouldn’t
Cheat on taxes/dispose of your neighbors noisy dog
No temptations??? Good week or facing spiritual pride
Two part message on temptations- verse one today

Jesus baptized, spirit upon him, my beloved son
Then immediately into wilderness
Spirit does not make us comfy for too long

The spirit leads you where you do not want to go

Romans 8: it is given on the behalf of Christ, both to believe on his name and also to suffer for his sake
=We want the honor, but not the struggle
=Joy but not the sorrow
Jesus, in order to fulfill his mission had to put himself in a position that no one would want to be in. It was a vital part of preparing himself for the future

Paul, had a thorn in the flesh
A messenger from satan, prayed for it to go away
It did not, my strength is made perfect in weakness

Source of temptations
-they are a natural part of our world
-James 1:12-14 we are drawn aside by our own lusts and tempted

What do you gain from the trouble that you face
Unhappiness, discomfort, character
1 cor 13? God of all comfort 2 cor 1:3-4

There are things that none of us want to find in our lives
Ecclesiasticus 2:1
Son, when thou comest to the service of God, stand in justice and in fear, and prepare thy soul for temptation.

Methodist preachers…go to places where no man has gone before
New faces, new town
“well, that is the life that you chose”
yes it is. It is also the life that you chose when you chose christ
