Cain & Able Genesis 4:1-9 10/24/99

Cain & Able Genesis 4:1-9 10/24/99
Track Team...best 880 man, worst 880 man

Did not care, did not apply myself, was not thinking

Cain wasn't thinking either, Cain was did not apply tp himself
He was not spiritually engaged
Was not paying attention to what worship was about
It was about this ego, his value, bot God's

Jesus turns over the tables of the money changers
Providing a needed product for sacrifice
Were not paying attention to what worship was about

Now there are times when you may not be thinking of God/Duality
Can't do it every minute of the day
Sometimes it is sacrilegious to think about God [chiefs]
This is the ebb & floe of life
Have those times: go to the party, hand with friends
But find those times when your heart is engaged with the work of the Lord

In newcomer's class, we cover prayers, presence, gifts & service
Serve in some capacity, give as you have been given to
Be present hen not sick or out of town
Praying...being spiritually engaged
Pray once per week, pray for the church
Be engaged with an attitude that sees the good

Those who are unable to do so are forever stuck arguing over carpet color
What we are doing here is not about us...It is about worshipping God

Whether we are leading a Bible study or painting a wall
having a heart that is engaged makes all the difference
the task comes alive

Are you spiritually engaged when you come to church
Are you awake when you come to church
Does your heart join in the prayers/Does your voice join in the ssongd

Pay attention to why you are here for:
Yes visit with friends, but remember your purpose, remember focus

Story of Allen Anderson
I invite you to help make this place great
by becoming a great person
Be spiritually engaged

The Beatitudes/David & Abigail-Matthew 5:1-12 10/17/99

Qualitative and quantitative

Do We Look at the quantity of the qualities in people?

The love bug story [willingness to sacrifice selves]

Beatitudes Blessed are the peacemakers
For they shall be called the children of God
O to have such a countenance that people will recognize you as one of the Lord's children

Story of David & Abigail
David...future King, stuck on himself
Nabal...wealthy shepherd, hard to get along with
Abigail...gracious woman, wife of Nabal

David cares for Nabal's shepherds

Wants some bounty in return

Have you ever done good expecting good in return?
Is this true giving?

Nabal refuses the request
Have you been stubborn, clamed up and insisted you were right?

David prepares to kill Nabal & his men
Have you ever lashed out in anger?

Abigail intercedes, apologizes & brings gifts
When have you gone the second mile to make peace?
Apologized for the actions of others?

David apologizes for his selfishness
Are you willing to see your shortcomings and apologize?

Nabal is told of Abigail's actions, has a stroke and dies
David takes Abigail to be his wife

A situation that could have led to violence and brokenness
Was thwarted because someone looked at the right things
People are always more important than ideas

Jesus hows this when asked about which is the correct place for worship

Y2K Part 1 Matthew 7 Feb. 7, 99

Y2K Part 1 2-7-99 Mt. 7

Y zero K
Y one K
Y two K

For years some insisted that the end of time and Jesus return was coming soon.

It it? Of that day and of that hour knoweth no man. Mt. 24:36

The 1880's saw mathematical equations relative to the pyramids
The 1914 saw prophetic words connected with WW1
The 40's saw them connect with WW2
In the 1970's
Hal Lindsey....the late great planet earth
Movie..... a thief in the night
The ten nations of the common market
Prophets have for ever told of the end of time and the return of Christ

When is the end of time? When is the return of Christ? Mt. 24:36
You can get lost in the stuff

Evangel, book learning, pre trib, post trib and what is it really about?
Be filled with his love
Do the work of God

So this is the Point of message.....
You will hear them say it is over
Surprised to hear Falwell go there
Much emotion can be raised about the end of time
I will not be among them
When is the hour? Mt. 24:36

Beware of those who lead you falsely....
Beware of those who would have you sell your homes,
give to their ministries, and then wait on a mountain top
Beware of those who would scare you
Do not follow the secret knowledge of the end of time.
Follow the fruits of Christ in your life

To some he will say ....I never knew yout
And look at what they were doing.

That means more than doing good works
It means more than being a good person....a moral person
It means that we must do the work of Christ, to the glory of Christ

For those who choose to seek out, and be filled with his love, today,
tomorrow, this year, next year, every day that God gives us, we will be ready.

Let us strive to fulfill his will and his purpose for us on this earth
Spend your time on the things that matter.
-be a loving friend
-be a caring spouse
-be a committed parent
- be filled with the love of Christ
If we do that, no matter when it is...we will be ready for his return.

Raising of Lazarus "O How He Loves" 8-15-99

Sermon 8-15-99 Raising of Lazarus "O how he loves"

Intro...Pat Shumate story

Jerrod, 16, brain tumor, grief, part of family, doesn't want to lose him
Vacillates between faith and doubt, peace and anger

All of us have struggles
Death, finances, divorce, illness, relationships
Even children have them...rejection, fitting in

They are all important
Story of black butterflies...it was a problem to him

Part of the human condition is the pain of brokenness
How do we face it...How do we overcome?

Lessons from the story of Lazarus death
Jesus cared, God feels the pain of our grief and cares
Jesus loved...O how he loved him

this is not a sickness unto death, but that God would be glorified
Every situation is one in which God can be glorified
Jesus can help us through our problems
he didn't solve everyone's problems...Lazarus died again

i have been to some bad places
In the day of my sister in laws wedding I was called to the hospital to baptize a baby that was dying
I have seen some bad stuff

I have noticed in my journeys there...two ways we can handle our pain
  1. resist, struggle, hate, be bitter
we usually start here, but don't get stuck here
    Romans 12
Natural human tendency is to bite back, angry, bitter, depressed
Do not return evil for evil, overcome evil with good
Do not inject anger into a situation
  2. others come to find rest in the Lord
learn to understand his love, not just talk about it, but feel it come to believe that he is there
If circumstances change/not, being connected makes a difference
Jesus loves me this I know

Pray for those who need to know the love of God

Soul to Soul John3 9-12-99

Sermon 9-12-99 Soul to Soul John3

While some think the soul can be in constant communion with God

Those who live in the real world, know there is a gap between where we live and feeling connected with God.

Opening scene of 2001 space odyssey...
monkeys beating bones, throws bone in to dai
return a call, not even an answering machine...
I'm trying, but its not working
Hammering, screwing, cleaning house...hey wait a minute
We as God's people feel a deep need to be closer to him

Nicodemus, a pharisee, goes to see Jesus

Comes at night so as to not bee seen
You are from God, it is clear...saw something real
You must be born again

I found it...I lost it...I never lost it
Don't be lost by the work

UMC is lower key...Don't confuse low key with lack of purpose

Jesus meaning is clear
Jesus means that those who find true faith in God, trust him
Follow him
They are not stuck in the ruts of their preconceived notions
Somehow their soul has reconnected to God

Story of the snakes Numbers2:1-9
Relating to Ni cod emus' world
They had to look up to be delivered from the serpents
Poster, list up thine eyes
Albert Einstein, nothing is a miracle

When we look up, we transcend the struggle of this world
We are born again
Our hearts, mind and souls are free

Does you soul seek to be connected to God? Look up, look to the cross
Ask and it shall be given to you, seek and ye shall find, knock and the door shall be opened unto you.
My job here is not primarily to hand sheet rock or build fences
If I can help you in your journey, please call me...

Do you yearn for more of Him?
then see more of him

An Unexpected Road Exodus 13:17-22 3-21-99

Sermon 3-21-99 Exodus13:17-22 An Unexpected Road

Life doesn't always turn out the way what you expect it to
Didn't get the job I wanted
Didn't make first chair in the band
Don't have hair anymore
Found out that meaningful living can be hard work

The Israelites had an idea of what the exodus would be like
Yet God led then down an unexpected road
Purge/eliminate some of their enemies
Teach then faithfulness; rely on God, not a land
Show them that men plan, but God makes it happen
Cause them to understand and love him

There were times when they did not like it
They were attacked by snakes
They were hungry and thirsty
Sometimes they even wanted to go back to Egypt

In all...God was with them
Pillar of cloud by day/pillar of fire by night
At the right moment, He would rise up and strike a blow for his purpose
they all had ideas about how it should work
God made it happen in his time
God's job was to lead. Their job was to follow

Sound familiar?

I remember when we voted to move
I didn't anticipate the emotional pain of leaving
I didn't anticipate the delays, cost overruns, challenges

this is not the path that I expected that we would take.
I believe that God has been teaching us things that we need to know
Preparing us to be successful
Helping us to learn patience, dependence on him
It is a different toad, but it is not a bad road

and like the Israelites, we do not go it alone
We do not see the pillar of cloud or fire...but I have seen it
I have felt it
We are not alone

God is still leading; we must discern his voice and follow

So it is true for us as individuals
When we decide to follow God, we agree to do things his way.
Our preconceived notions are challenged
We face things that frighten us.
Change is hard
How shocked were you when you figured out that everything isn't going to work the way you thought it should?
Following Christ means to learn to think and act differently
How many of our lives would be different if totally committed to him?
How many attitudes
How many marriages
How would our priorities change?
God's road is not always our road, it is a challenging rd, but a good one

Today Woods Chapel continues down the road
It is not the road we chose, but it is not a bad road
It is God's road, he is with us
Let's join our hearts and hands and take the next step
We are going the right direction
We are going to make it, we are making it
For our God goes before us.

Does it look the same/
Do the people look the same?
[join hands]
Does it feel the same?

Sermon 6-13-99 Isaiah 6:1-8

Sermon 6-13-1999 Isaiah6:1-8

Intro...trip to Nebraska...looking for inspiration

Lord please give me something worth $200
Gos has a way of getting his business done
So it was in the case of Isaiah

He finds himself in the throne room of God
What was the room like?
Doesn't matter
Being in the presence of God was overwhelming
Enamored with our new building???
We need to see God in such a manner that the building is nothing

In the presence of God he is aware of his sin
We together folks don't often thing of our sin]
Well, some are overwhelmed, paralyzed by their sin
Most have settled into the comfortable like
Isaiah in the presence of Gos is aware of his sin
I am unclean
O to be close enough to the Lord that I can see his holiness
And am aware of my sin
That may seem bad on the outside,
It really is good, God forgives sin...his sins are forgiven
Angel takes a coal to his lips

God is looking for someone
Not those who are perfect, but thoses who are gorgiven.
He asks the question...who will go?
Who will do the work of the Lord
Same question goes out today

Who will hear the call of God
Not just for preachers
though maybe it is time for the vacational call to do out
Years ago we sent people out into the ministry
The call is not just for preachers
All Christians are called to be about the Lord's work
No volunteers in the Kingdom, only servants
Jesus did not ask for volunteers
Baptism is symbolic of change, cleaning
Those who are baptized declare that their life is not about them

We have much work to do here at Woods Chapel
God has blessed us for a reason
Programs to touch lives, help the needy
Not programs for programs sake, but those things God is calling us to
I have it in my heart, I can perform it
Start small, see who else is interested, see how funding works
Real ministry springs from heart
missions is just on of those things...time to hear the call of God
Buttons, Wendy Calvert, Suzie Irwin, David Fox

In the past I have asked for your help
Often you have responded...not always but ofter
Today I do not ask for your help
I ask that God ask you to help him
That you will experience the presence of God
Know that your sins are forgiven
and hear him call you
I am praying for you I am praying that you will flat out hear his call
Here I am Lord, send me.

Let us pray

The Potters Field Romans 8:14 8-22-99

Sermon 8-22-99 The Potter's Field

Being a parent means that sometimes you have to deliver the bad news

No you cannot spend the night, you cannot play in the dirt, you cannot do that right now, that behavior is not acceptable, you are going to find trouble if if continues.
Going back to school is a good example of a preemptive strike I take every year. Be good, do well, if you are trouble in school, you'll be in trouble at home.

Jeremiah is a deliverer of bad news
Questions the character of Israel & warns of trouble ahead

The pottor's shop
Shaping, breaking, throwing out, shaping, using...

Bill Blancards & the pottery shop
Not about money, he was creating, giving, shaping
One at a time or a whole set/individually or corporately

The potter's hand is on the clay
Most joyful moment of my life cam when I understood that I was loved
When God takes your hand it is forever [even for Israel]
God is a perfect gentleman

The potter has a plan, an idea, a drean/the potter is shaping
He doesn't throw us away
God don't make junk
A purpose to which he is forming us
Compare your concpt of purpose in life with Gods
Spending more time on you outward self or inward self?

The end is a vessel
We don't always see the end of His plan, but there is a plan
You are a vessel of God

What will you carry in your vessel?
What is on the inside? Read the light of God from Dick Burnett
Not always so...Sometimes we choose to fill our hearts with the wrong thing

Importance of today's acts of grace...read Tomorrow

this is the essence of the Christian faith

To believe that you are in the hands of a loving God
To turn yourself over, submit to his design
To carry his love to those in your world

If Tomorrow Never Comes

If I knew it would be the last time that I'd see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly and pray the Lord, your soul to keep,
If I knew it would be the last time that I see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss and call you back for one more.
If I knew it would be the last time I'd hear your voice lifted us in praise,
I would video tape each action and word, so I could play them back day after day.
If I knew it would be the last time, I could spare an extra minute to stop and say "I Love You." instead of assuming, you would KNOW I do.
If I knew it would be the last time I would be there to share your day,
"well I'm sure you'll have so many more, so I can let just this one slip away
For surely there's always tomorrow to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance to make everything right.
There will always be another day to say our "I Love you's"
And certainly there's another chance to say our "Anything I can do's?"
But just in case I might be wrong, and today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you and I hope we never forget
that tomorrow isnot promised to anone, young or old alike,
and today may be the last chance you get to hold your loved on tight.
So if you're waiting for tomorrow, why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes, you'll surely regret the day.
That you didn't take that extra time for a smile, a hug, or a kiss
and you were too busy to grant someone, what turned out to be their one last wish.
So hold your loved ones close today, whisper in their ear,
Tell them how mush you love then and that you'll always hold them dear,
Take time to day "I'm sorry," "please forgive me.""thank you" or "it's okay"
and if tomorrow never comes, you'll have no regrets about today.

Guidance

The light of Giod shines from within me as wisdon and understanding.

Stars brightly gleaming on a clear summer night are a vision of beauty and also a reminder of the magnificent order that exists in the universe.

Within me, too, is a brightly shining light - a divine light of wisdom and inspiration. I am a child of God. With all the beauty and majesty of brightly shining starts, God's lights of understanding guides me in the choices I make each day. I intuitively know how to be loving and compassionate toward others.

The light of God within me is an instant, constant connection to all the wisdom I will ever need for myself and for offering support to others, I am a child of God whose radiant inner light of spiritually is shining out into the world. This is light that reveals the answer to every question of mind and heart.

"For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God." - Romans8:14

Jonah & the Whale 10-6-1999

Sermon 10-6-1999 Jonah & the Whale

Intro.

Start at Cocoa Beach
Seagulls, sandcastles, ships on the sea
Kids thinking about sharks, [there is something int he water],
I'm thinking about Jonah

Jonah
Prophet [used to doing God's bidding]
Called to go, doesn't want to
God always calls us out of selfishness and into service

Runs
God follows
Jonah may not care, but God cares about people
That is good news
In a day filled with calamity and uncertainty, God cares about people
Thrown overboard
Swallowed by whale
Read Jonah's song of repentance
Delivers message
Ninevah repents and turns to the Lord
Jonah is still unhappy about God's grace being extended to the ninevites

What are you called to?
Have you ever run from it? [how do we do this?]
I'll do anything but that...
God follows you [sometimes its not what you want, but what God wants]
You notice & people notice the brokenness in your soul
Feel like you were in the belly of the whale
Will we repent?
What is the thing that you don't want to do?
Who are the people that you don't want to go to?
God has called you because you can do it with his help

Conclusion
Is there something you should do?
Is there some way in which God wants you to be more vulnerable?
Open, caring?
Are there people that you should be reaching out to?
Some of you are in the belly of the whale
Being squeezed, trying to fight off the call of God
Maybe there is someone that you should apoligize to
Maybe you should make an effort to touch your child
To rectify a wrong
To share God's love
To touch a soul
Some of you God is calling to stop saying no and start saying yes
To overlook the sins of others
To deliver to them the same grace that you received

I am asking you to hear the word of the Lord
I am asking you to respond to his leading
Find a quiet place to sit down, hear the waves roll in on the beach
Get in touch with your soul
Hear the call of God
Follow it. You and many others will be blessed.

Labor Day Matthew 11:25-30 09-06-99

Sermon Matthew11:25-30 Labor Day 09-06-1999

Boy we have a lost going on don't we
Busy here, busy there
Anybody just take it easy this weekend?
Get a holiday to rest from our labor, and fill it with stuff to do

Speaking of things to do, we have a lot of work to do
Not on the building,
But did you know that the world is going to end on Saturday night?

Jesus asks those who are weary to come to him
These is not a promise of a cruise, or a cabin in the woods
But coming to him , is a place of rest
The place of rest is him
it feels so good to be in church, in the presence of God

He says his yoke is easy, his burden is light
What is a yoke? [animal harness]
Explain how yokes are fitted and how they break in
He calls us to do that which we can, the things we are made for

It is amazing how little you on pull when it doesn't fit
How frustrating it is when you are engaged in that which isn't you
And how much you can pull when it does fit.
Following Christ, letting him lead,
will direct you to those pieces of life that fit, which provide meaning to your heart

So today we hear the promise of God, come to me and find rest.
Is he able to keep his promise? There is only one way to find out
Come to him, take the challenge, and find out what Christians have been experiencing for over 2000 years

Isaiah40:27-31 [read it]
they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength

When Relationship Go Bad - Hebrew 12:14-17 Aug 17, 2009

When Relationships Go Bad - Hebrew12:14-17 August 17, 2009

Difficult topic today

Marriage and Divorce
Today I offer: Pain then relief then hones responsibility
Matthew5 - except adultery
John4 - women at well
Adultery in and of itself is not enough
There is only one reason for fracture
Hebrew12 - loss of grace is the only reason
And sometimes we get there.....we do run out of grace

See to it that no one misses the grace of God and than no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many

Hubert Neth Story
When going to the pastor for their third marriage the couple was a bit nervous. What would the preacher say: In offering grace to the couple he told then that he had recently left a funeral where the widow had remarked on how glad she was that the old man was gone. So you see I celebrate love anytime I see it.

Friendships
Pain is easy to find

Many biblical examples of friendship
Jacob and Essau
Pharoah's butler and Joseph
Samson & Delilah
Job's friends=miserable comforters
Jesus and Judas
Paul and Barnabas
Jesus in John6:66
We find it
It hurts

Friendship
The wounds of a friend run deep
Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses. Proverbs27:+
What was the friend trying to do

Honor You Mother and Father 7-25-99

Honor your father and mother

Care for them, they wont be here for ever

Visiting the sins of the fathers upon their children

Visiting with mercy upon those who love him.

Honoring your parents shows that you can honor god

It does not mean that your parents should control your life.

Communion "I Want To Know Him" 05/02/99

Sermon 5-2-99 Communion "I want to know him"

1. Bob Tuttle….get your licks in for Jesus

2. The man who found the treasure in the field

3. Paul Identified, rejected, refocused

4. Cassie Bernall age 17
a. life changed by Christ
b. stood up to gunmen
c. paid with her life
d. poem
It was discovered on her desk by her younger brother, Chris, Tuesday night when it became clear that she would not be coming home.
Now I have given up on everything else-- I have found it to be the only way to really know Christ and to experience the mighty power that brought him back to life again, and to find out what it means to suffer and to die with him. So, whatever it takes I will be one who lives in the fresh newness of life of those who are alive from the dead.
e. we don’t have the opportunity that she did to take a stand for Christ

5. We have sold ourselves, but not to Christ
a. our hobbies
1. golf, softball, gardening, tool guys, socializing, watching tv
b. our security
1. homes, cars, retirement
c. our children’s hobbies
baseball, piano ptc, clubs, soccer, gymnastics
d. we discipline them by keeping them out of church activities

6. Learn how to give faith to your children
The Bernals appealed to parents to become more involved in the lives of their children. They urged teenagers to find their way to Church. "Don't let my daughter's death be for nothing. Make your stand. If you are not in a local church, try it"

BOSTON GLOBE 4/24/99....The last assignment Cassie completed on this earth was a reading that was to have been discussed at a youth group meeting the night she died. The book is called "Seeking Peace". In a chapter entitled "No Life without Death", the author quotes the Gospel of John: "Unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But when it dies, it produces many seeds"

Conclusion…..
We dedicate this new building, not to our comfort, not to our pride but to the glory of God, that the name of Jesus Christ would be lifted up

1. see all those cool things

2. count them as rubbish

3. find Christ, offer him to your families, friends, self
how?
a. come to church/get involved
b. children involved in church activities first
c. pray….
d. Read the scriptures
e. Understand just how much he did for you
f. Open heart…..I want nothing more than Jesus

Commandments Part 3 8-1-99

Sermon 8-1-99

Commandments Part 3

Do not murder
Kill or murder?
He that hates his brother is a murderer

Do not bear false witness
Winston Churchill’s quote….we will fight on the beaches
Exaggerating the mistakes of other so that you look better

Stu and the car on blocks
The table on the deck and the broken glass

Leads to communion
Forgiveness
Love others as I have loved you

God Speaks 05-23-99

God speaks

In any relationship, part of getting to know someone is listening to them
You can talk all day, but until you listen to them, you do not come to know them

Prayer is not just us talking to God, we must learn to listen.
We must listen

He speaks with insights bigger than we are

He speaks and it brings peace

It makes sense/not always in human way

There is a sense of knowing that comes

Not everyone has the Damascus Road experience
God relates to people in as many ways as there are people.

Sometimes God tells us things that we do not want to hear
That preacher won’t stop talking about love
If you are not hearing anything that challenges you as a person, you are not hearing from god
Put it on the shelf

Goodbye Hospital 4-18-99 2 Corinthians

Sermon 4-18-99

Goodbye to hospital

2 Corinthians12:7-10

I have not come to call the sick but the well to repentance

Paul’s thorn in the flesh

What happens when our problems do not go away?

Once asked Oral Roberts the question…..
