at their best it seems that all many of us can do is to just run the race

Thought struck me...these gave their time, their youth, their lives
so that we could have all of this
It is a fact that those who do not work for what they get...appreciate it less
that the easy way to do things is rarely the right way to do things
that the line of least resistance rarely delivers long term satisfaction
Are we thinking of others in our daily living...or just living for ourselves
Disc of children...Folks we can't always do the fun stuff
someone must teach them boundaries
Money...why is it that so many of us don't want to make a living this year?
we want to make it this week

It is time that we think again about sacrifice
It is time that we look to the time honored traditions that made America great
It is time that we look to the example of Jesus Christ
and remember that we are only free when our souls are free to love others

Turn the Hearts of People 9-8-96 1 Kings 18:36-45
Turn the Hearts of People 1 Kings 18:36-45
Joke....plane losing engines.... 4 clergy on board....I'd rather have 4 good engines
sometimes we would rather have the earthly things than the heavenly
such was the case for King Ahab
Ahab, married Jezebel from a neighboring tribe
build a temple to the baals
allowed their prophets in, sought to kill the prophets of the Lord
Elijah..it will not rain [drought] for the next several years, unless I say so
Ahab chased, Elijah hid
The it was time..meet me at Mt. Carmel... bring the prophets of Baal
baal's prophets tried the sacrifice
Elijah mocks the prophets
Elijah calls on the Lord
The point of this event was that God wanted to turn the hearts of the people back
Ahab seems at this point to be a passive participant
Elijah is happy....I hear the sound of an abundant rain
go check the horizon...7 time...cloud like a man'shand
you all go home so that you don't get stopped y the rain
Idols are easy to worship....you can see them, touch them
but serving them gets in the way of serving the Lord
what is the good news for today
that God will bless us if we service him? there will never be a drought?
materially....maybe, but probably not
knowing and being with the Lord is all that matters
If your soul is dry, and you feel like you are in a drought
choose to return to him....there is a thunder booming in the distance
You don't have to be perfect
His desire is to pour blessing upon you...the blessing of himself

God please help us get more food.
Help us get more money so we can buy food for poor people and sad people.
Pray that everyone believes in God.
Help us pray to God every day and night.
If we ever get lost, please help us find our way back.

What are we teaching our children? and other significant folks in our lives"
-do we put them off, fail to love them because we are busy doing our own things?

-do we fail to discipline them because we are too busy doing our own things?
a Father chastens those whom he loves.
if you don't care enough to discipline, you don't care
This "me" thing is a sly thing.....
our weaknesses cause us to over compensate
root problem of the world.....reason Jesus was sent to earth
selfishness = sin, sin+ selfishness
What are we giving to our children and to those we love?
Do we give them what makes sense to our left brain minds?
Or are we in touch with our hearts....
do we care, love and give from the heart, with the spirit?
Paul discussed struggle between Spirit & Flesh in Romans 6, 7, & 8
He that loseth wealth, loseth much; he that loseth friends, loseth more;
but he that loseth his spirit loseth all.
Love shares, and love guides, even when it is hard to do so
-It is not my job to entertain you....or to bail you out of every trial you find...
-It is my job to love you and spend time with you when I can
-It is my job to help you to grow up safe and reach your potential
-It is my job to help you to learn to do the right things....to live responsibly.
Children will never learn to love if we do not teach them....

I am certain that after the dust of centuries has passed over our cities, we, too, will be remembered not for victories or defeats in battle or in politics, but for our contribution to the human spirit---
Wouldn't it be nice if some of us were remembered for our contributions to the human spirit?

I wonder if God is still interested in turning the hearts of the fathers towards the children?

When was the last time we talked to someone about our church?
We have our own thing......it is a good thing
do we get too comfortable in our church setting?
1. spoke to folks that you knew vs did not know?

2. Assimilating folks into the Church
providing groups for them to find what they need
When was the last time your group intentionally sought new folks?
We have something to gain from them.....they may be angels.....
they may be here at the bidding God
they may have something for us that we do not want to miss
The Good new is Good.....it is good for us.....we savor it
It is not our sole possession
When you know a good story you want to tell it
telling folks about Jesus, embracing them with his love is a natural outgrowth of our faith

Today I celebrate the character of Woods Chapel Church
we reflect the whole body of Christ, that is working, that is healthy
the heart works
truly accepting/truly diverse
all races
many varied beliefs
several political and social streams
the hands work
compassionately in mission
feeding the hungry
caring for the homeless
sending money when the call is too far away
The feet work
Romans10...how beautiful the feet that bring the gospel of peace
we are afoot...bringing new of the caring love of Jesus Christ

it's the kingdom of God
they all provided excuses
people don't change do they...
a great thing is offered, yet we balk, and offe excuses
In today's languagge...hearing God
attedning an event that God calls us to
In tradition of David Letterman, top 10 excuses that keep people from entering and progressing in the kingdom of God
10. I bought a farm
9. I bought a team of oxen
8. I married a wife
7. the weather is bad
6. the weather is too good
5. I'm too tired, it's my only day to sleep in
4. It's my only day to spend with my family
3. We're going to the lake
2. There are hypocrites there
1. They ask too much from me
No excuse is good enough...it we are going to do it...let's go
let's take a moment to ponder the things that God has called us to
let's count the excuses we have given
let's consider amending our ways

between Christmas and Lent...ephiphany, baptism, temptations, teachings

Growing up...Carole Boye...all it takes to be an x-ian like a mustard seed
she used it as an excuse not to do anything
I don't think that this story is about entering the kingdom
the kingdom of God is about learning how to live...about growing as a person
its about finding potential that you didn't even know you had
its about growing to where you can produce a harvest
that your life is filled with things that are good
things that others can feed on...find shade under...and nest safely in
Before you were a part of Gods family, you didn't know how small yuo are
your tried to do it all in your own strength
you struggled and whines
sometimes we forgot and fall back in to old patterns
but now, as a member of God's family, you know who you are
and you know who God is
you know that there is a power greater than you
What have you been faced with in like?
Real heart breaking deals...most of have had very little
How will I grow up?
What will I do Since Lisa broke up with me?
How will I find joy and meaning?
How can I overcome grief?
what ever it is, you may feel small, but small is only a condition of the heart
the fact is, you are small in your own strength, but God is here to help you grow
You have to take life's challenges one at a time...tomorrow may not be here.
As far as reality is concerned...this moment is the only time

Thats not ture...one time I beat him on a race down cherry hill
one time I did a back flip at Randy Coopers bd...
brother chickened out
One time I beat both my brothers in the cow ship throwing contest
even is they are better
even if they beat you 99 times out of 100
that still leaves

how many times have I seen others on the road, yet did not stop tp help
Let's catch Jesus...what do I do to inherit eternal life
it's no good enough just to talk of the things of God,
in in our heart there is darkness or selfish intent
Jesus answers...love neighbor as self
but who is my neighbor...gentiles not the neighbors of Jews
Good Samaritan story
hurt man most likely a Jew...certain road...samaritan insertion
one of your kind came along...Priest...passed by on other side
another one of your kind came along...levite...looked on him...then passed by
a Samaritan came along [Russians, mid-east terrorists, political extremist]
he tore garments...got blood on them...walked let another man ride
took him to help...paid the bill...interrupted his life to help
not suggesting that you get killed trying to help...or is it others have been crucified to do the right things
exactly what Jesus did for us... we were stripped naked in our sin
how much are we indebted to Him
what can we render such a deed of kindness?
James4:17 To know the good, and do it not, it is sin
at least this...its better to err onthe side of helping too much, than to turn away the needy
how are we doing?
we could be doing more, better, but some of us are doing well

Peter had a dream
Cornelius was a gentile
peter did not want to go [only jews were to find salvation]
yet he did, and God blessed
Peter learned...everyone who believes in him receives forginvenss of sins through his name
there is not creed attached
first and foremost...MLK was a great man
not because he was black, a black activist, but because he was a Christian who stood up against the evil of his day
His views were rooted in his faith
He had a dream, not new with him, that all people would dwell together in unity and peace
who's in, who's out
we are so worried about who's in, who's out
who can be in our club...who is cool...who has the right beliefs
right behavior...gays...right beliefs
The dream of MLK...the God he knew began with people as people...where they were at the message of the scripture is that Jesus, all are welcome, all are accepted
there is not creed attached
who are we excluding?
God has a dream that all will dwell together in unity
find healing at the foot of the cross
I do not chastize you today...I know of no more accepting group of people we as WCUMC congregation
we will make it...we are a family
in Christ Jesus we have family blood bonds
I am asking you to believe that all are welcome...
