I Believe - Part 3 Apostles Creed 8-19-07

Sermon 8-19-07 I believe pt 3, the apostles creed

13When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"
14They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets."
15"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?"
16Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ,[b] the Son of the living God."
17Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. 18And I tell you that you are Peter,[c] and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades[d] will not overcome it.[e] 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be[f] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[g] loosed in heaven." 20Then he warned his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ.

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. AMEN.

Here Jesus has a very impt conversation with his disciples
Who do you say that I am? Peter’s confession

Upon this rock I will build my church……..
peters confession strikes at the heart of the purpose of the church
The holy catholic church
the pope’s words about the extended church
lots of catholic leaders secretly wish these words had not been said…..

part 2……..I am going to Jerusalem to die…….get thee behind me satan
-not that peter is Satan
you are asking me to leave God’s purpose and follow human purpose

Jesus was tough on the people that followed him. He was honest and clear and expected them to stay on mission.

The danger of the church today….we get it, and then we forget it
Its about jesus and his purpose, opps no, now its about me and my purpose

When you become a Christian, something changes….
There is something inside of us that wants to give itself away
To look for that purpose outside of ourselves

What is the church
The church is not a building…….what will happen if a tornado destroys our church?

the church is the holder of doctrine, but it that is not it’s primary purpose

the church celebrates the holy scriptures, but that is not its primary purpose

The church exists to worship……….we give ourselves away to God
It is a selfless thing…not about getting, but giving

Gathering of people for a common purpose
Win the world for Jesus Christ
Side bar is that we care about each other along the way
Tough in a larger church
Need every small group to be looking out for its members…….
- to care for them
- to hold them to our mission

The church at its worst
Easier to tear down a good church than to build a good church
The 4 monks at union station

the church is not a country club
In a museum Detroit, Michigan, there is a huge steam locomotive. Beside this complicated piece of machinery is a sign showing boiler pressure, size and number of wheels, horsepower, lengths, weight and more. The bottom line indicates that 96 percent of the power generated was used to move the locomotive and only 4 percent was left to pull the load. Some churches are like that.

the church is not a museum. The church is ellis island

on being fed………
someone was leaving because they were not being fed
the church exists to worship……….we give ourselves away to God
it is an act of giving, not taking

What are we looking for in a church.
A place to be happy, or a place to be faithful?

Did mother teresa ever say, O, I am not being fed

If you want to be fed, it will never be enough
If you want to change the world in the name of Jesus Christ, lets join hands and go to work……

Prayer of st francis
It is a principle of the Christian faith
I lose myself to find myself
I Give, then I receive

The church at its best
Recognizes the identity and the purpose of Jesus

What made the early church tick?
Faith in Christ and a desire to give that away
They did not sit and wait for others to come to them….
They went to the ends of the earth

Is the purpose of the church to call us to be christlike……
Yes, then what did he do………he gave his life for a cause
What are you giving your life to?

What did Jesus mean when he said, come follow me?

In A successful church
The people are Spiritually engaged

People working to keep things good

They know and follow their mission

Conclusion
the church is not a haven for saints, it is a hospital for sinners
who wants to stay in the hospital forever

Jesus did not command the world to go to church. He commanded the church to go to the world

Next 10 years…..10 people into ministry-10 people into mission field

Bishop Bruce Blake noted the difference between the church as a tunnel and as a cave. A cave is an underground area where one goes in and comes out at the same place, the bishop observed. A tunnel, on the other hand, is where one goes in and comes out in a different place.

it is important that the church see itself as a tunnel and not a cave. If we come out of church at the same place we went in, then something is wrong.

We are brokers of the words of life….
We stand with peter who said, you are the Christ, the son of the living god.

Sign above church door. Now entering the mission field
Its about time that we started to think of ourselves as missionaries

Prayer of St. Francis

Apostles Creed Part 2 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 8-11-07

Sermon 8-11-07 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 apostles creed, part 2

Apostle’s creed part 2

Today I want to talk with you about the work of Jesus Christ and
The miraculous life of Jesus

The work of Christ…………
Humiliation - philippians
Exaltation

Read Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

Humiliation
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried;

exaltation………the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. AMEN.

Philippians 2
Humiliation
5Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6Who, being in very nature[a] God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7but made himself nothing, taking the very nature[b] of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross!
Exaltation
9Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

I must comment on - Descended into hell

1 peter 3:18-19
18For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit, 19through whom[d] also he went and preached to the spirits in prison

Some believed that Jesus descended into hell based on this scripture.
Because of the limited scriptural basis, many churches have pulled this part from the creed.
Another possibility, is that “he died, we was in the place of the dead.”

Lets talk about the miraculous life of Jesus
It is on display in the apostles creed…..
But first, What is a miracle?

· Type one: natural miracles. Grand canyon, sunset, the bodies ability to heal itself, etc.
· Type two: someone recovers from a seemingly life threatening disease
· Type three: an arm grows back, the dead are raised
Man with withered-shriveled hand, Mark 3
Raised Lazarus

Some claim to be workers of miracles

Be careful. It is my duty to warn you.

Real faith is rarely found in the sensational.
Real faith is found when we put our trust in Christ.

Tv preachers- claim the ability to heal
God heals
Peter Popoff-electronic helps

Hospitals would be empty
People would come from all over
Miracles are normative for the church
No person or place will be glorified by miracles except Jesus………

Jesus is unique in this regard…………

John the Baptist speaks of Jesus
John 3:34For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God[k] gives the Spirit without limit. 35The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.

If Jesus embodied the miraculous
What are some of the miracles of his life?
Conceived by the holy spirit
Born of the virgin many
Water into wine
Fed 5,000
Walked on water
Healed people
Raised Lazarus
Rose from the dead

The miracle that Jesus Is made real in the hearts of people today

Conclusion
Can we believe this?

It takes more faith to not belief than to believe
A Christian has to explain trouble in the world
An atheist has to explain the good
Who has a bigger job?

What happens if we don’t believe?
We start to question everything.
We start to explain it away……..
There is nothing left
Nothing but ourselves

If you have ever lived your life with yourself at the center,
you know that
· It only works for so long
· There is a naggings sense of I need something else
· We spend our life looking for fulfillment

Thomas: the doubter…………

John 20-28Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!"
29Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."
30Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31But these are written that you may[a] believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Why shouldn’t we believe? Faith is the great “yes” to God.
I invite you to hear the word of God and place your faith in our lord and savior Jesus Christ.

Purpose
Identify our main beliefs
As an affront to heresy………gnosticism, earliest heresy
· Many forms………boil down to the search for special knowledge
· Some preachers look for a new angle something new to talk about
· Some Christians need special knowledge…..separate themselves
As if the love of God thru Jesus Christ is not enough
As if the grace expressed is insufficient
· The apostles creed declares for all time that these are our basic beliefs
· There is nothing new under the sun

There is only one gospel….

We are bound together by our common belief.

Wesley’s catholic spirit--
Essentials of faith
Core values, bedrock beliefs
Core values
Joy
Authenticity
Excellence
Bedrock beliefs
God’s love is unconditional
Jesus Christ is Savior and Lord
The Holy Spirit is active in the world

Christians come in many flavors but we are bound together by our common belief

The 4 part singing around the piano…..
We are bound together by a common belief
How churches get smaller

I believe in the father
Maker of heaven and earth
Why not………….

Gen 1:1
I believe that god made it all….it did not just happen
Macro and micro evolution

If I made the world, I would not make all babies or all seedlings
Romans 1:20
20For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
Awakenings….its good, all good.

What does that mean?
I know the owner. I know the operator

Conclusion
Well belief…………..
I believe-what does that mean

Faith is not a leaping toward, faith is a resting upon
John G. Paton (1824-1907) was one of the great missionaries to the South Sea translating the Scriptures into the native language of these islanders, he could find no word for "believe." Since the concept of "belief" is so basic to the Christian faith, and to the New Testament, he didn’t know how to proceed

One day an exhausted islander came into his home, threw himself down in a chair, put his feet up on another chair, stretched his body and sighed how great it felt to be able to lean his whole weight on those two chairs. Instantly Paton knew his quest for the right word had ended. For belief is at its most basic level "leaning our whole weight" on God, surrendering to God's strength, not ours. Belief is not an act of truth. It is an act of trust.

I believe vs we believe

If you are tired of seeking for other things
If you are tired of living for other things,

Each must choose
Each must keep choosing
We never arrive
Being a Christian is giving all that you know of yourself to all that you know of God.
I invite you to choose to believe. To believe in God
