The Isaiah Project: Thirst, 7/5/15

Today’s Scripture: Isaiah 55:1-3 NIV
“Come, all you who are thirsty,come to the waters;
and you who have no money  come, buy and eat!
Come, buy wine and milk  without money and without cost.
Why spend money on what is not bread  and your labor on what does not satisfy?
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good  and you will delight in the richest of fare.
Give ear and come to me;    listen, that you may live.
I will make an everlasting covenant with you,   my faithful love promised to David.
Scripture asks – why are we Buying that which is not bread
We are Spending in ways that does not satisfy
Embracing things that do not satisfy
Holding to that which is not the main thing

Examples of things that you just couldn’t live without. & now it sits idle.
Sweater, kitchen gadget, power tool, car and payment

The whole advent of gift receipts
We buy way too many things that just don’t satisfy
And the invitation is to do less
And in spending less, begin to make room for Jesus

Many will spend less this year because of the economy
What if we learn to spend less because of a spiritual decision
The problem is not the stuff. The problem is that we want it too much
The spiritual issue is not stuff it's to learn to want less

Speaking of wanting less, some years ago I took a trip to Africa-Mozambique
Where do I begin - A story or two of how they live in Africa.
The number of funerals
12% have aids
20% children die before 5
Life expectancy is 42

It takes your breath away to think of how these people live

#1 take back from Africa-
What we worry about is absolutely unconscionable.
Tom Woodward and the Houston airport……..

Someone might say-
Well, there are hungry people here locally. Yes there are.
And they have shelters…….
To what degree are you investing in helping them?

Someone else said-
That is fine jeff, We live in a different world, that is not us.

No. I reject that. In God's kingdom there is no us and them.
There is no good ones vs bad ones, have vs have nots.
It is us. It is we. We are them. There is only one world.
They will sit across the table from us at the great banquet in heaven. What will we say then?

mt 25 is a salvation story- doing it for the least of these

An invitation to want less so that I can want God more.

So the scripture invites us to Come to the waters
is Why are our souls thirsty?
1.We have sought stuff

As long as we seek wholeness in stuff we will be hungry

Not that stuff is good or bad
But yearning for a day when we don’t want.
Nothing except to be with god

If we have less room for our stuff, our egos, our ideas, suddenly we have more room for god

The moment that we set aside the stuff and give up on it,
we begin to hear his voice
we begin to sense his presence

What if this year we totally rethought what we were doing. How we were living. Isn’t that what Jesus is asking us to do?

If you are tired of it, come to the waters
Eat and drink the good stuff of God and fine the life that is truly fulfilling.

2. we thirst because life has drug us down
we are lonely
we have been hurt

we have ALL been hurt….. will we be consumed by our wounds?

people w power sometimes hurt those around them
my kids and their bosses……..
use your power for good………..

Galatians 6:9-10
And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

Don’t be weary in well doing
Don’t be wary of well doing

Keep at it.
Christians don’t get to retire

do not be weary in well doing…………
what are the good things that you are doing?
Things that wear us out
Holding a job
Raising kids
Struggling with your self in battle of spirit vs flesh
Mow a neighbors grass
Feed the hungry
Clothe the poor
Being in relationships
Taking care of people
Don’t be weary in well doing………..
Turn the other cheek
Go the second mile
How do you feel when you are slapped?
How do you feel when you turn the other cheek?
How does it feel if you don’t turn the other cheek?

Do not render evil for evil, overcome evil with good

What do you do when you get knocked down?
You get back up.
Story of alli……….

Why 1- we find true spirituality when we stick with difficult things
A teacher was asked about a man who purported himself to be a follower of the teacher. The teacher remembered him. Yes, he attended some seminars, but he was never a student.

We are never really spiritually engaged until we see the warts
We never overcome until we struggle through
You are never really married until you make it thru the tough times
There is a joy that comes from perseverance

Why 2- you have chosen the good path, not the easy path, but the good path
Mercy rejoices over judgement
Grace triumps over guilt
They that sow in tears will reap in joy

Why 3 – it is what we are called to do and be
the right thing to do is the right thing to do even if you are the only one doing it
the wrong thing to do is the wrong thing to do even if everyone is ding it
doing good, the work of god, it is what we are called to

Why 4- you will reap
Watched major league, the replacements, another movie like this is little giants. We love movies where the underdog doesn’t quit, but comes from behind, against all odds to win.

Why should you stay with it? You will reap a harvest for god.
You are on a mission for him. You are making a difference

Martina mcbride song
"Anyway"You can spend your whole life buildin', Somethin' from nothin'One storm can come and blow it all away,
Build it anyway
You can chase a dream, That seems so out of reach-And you know it might not ever come your way,
Dream it anyway[chorus:]
God is great, but sometimes life ain't good
When I pray it doesn't always turn out like I think it should
But I do it anyway, I do it anyway
This world's gone crazy and it's hard to believe
That tomorrow will be better than today, Believe it anyway

conclusion
Are you thirsty for god?

Maybe you remember a time when you were closer to him than today
Maybe you have never know the value of loving him
sometimes The value of a thing is increased as we find ourselves without it

the soul is a spiritual thing
nothing can satisfy like  like jesus
only jesus can satisfy the soul
but he can………
the fix it shop
NOTHING BROKEN BEYOND REPIAR

Story of deep spiritual hunger as a youth….

If you are looking for something that is real……
Want an end to loneliness, anger, bitterness, insecurity
Jesus says to you today
I am the bread of life he who comes to me will never hunger, he who believes in me will never thirst…..

Are you hungry in your soul? Call upon the name of Jesus

Isaiah 55 - 1 "Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. 2 Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.
Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters;

Matthew 11:28Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest
