Sermon
9-21-14 Psalm 51 demello
1 Have mercy on me, O
God,
according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
3 For I know my
transgressions, and my sin is always before me.
4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight;
so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge.
5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
6 Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place.
4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight;
so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge.
5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
6 Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place.
7 Cleanse me with
hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be
whiter than snow.
8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity.
8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
9 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity.
10 Create in me a pure heart,
O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
Sermon series on the psalms—psalm 1,
psalm 23, psalm 51, psalm 150
David.
Quite
a story.
Slays
the giant Goliath
Is
anointed king as a boy
Hides
from king Saul
Makes
friends with Jonathan
After
saul’s death enters power struggle for supremacy
Comes
out on top.
David
is king David. Finally.
God
blesses David and David prays to God.
They
have a good thing going
His
armies defeat the philistines
He
brings the ark back to Jerusalem
Defeated
the Moabites, the arameans, the edomites
He
is the toughest king on the block.
He
is famous.
He
is on top of the world.
He
has multiple wives and concubines.
He
is the king. He can have anything that he wants.
He
is about to make a huge mistake
Sometimes
when everything is going a person’s way, they can get overconfident.
The
entire army is off at war, but David is at home in Jerusalem.
He
wakes up one night and wanders the rooftop.
He
sees a beautiful woman bathing. Bathsheba. [daughter of the oath]
Have
someone go check on her
She
is married to Uriah the Hittite.
David
calls for her anyway.
She
becomes with child.
David
sends a messenger to
Joab for Uriah to come home so the child might be his.
But
Uriah refuses to stay with his wife when his brothers in arms are at war.
David
got him drunk, still he would not go home to his wife because of his brothers in
arms sleeping in the field
He
sent Uriah back to the front line
He
told the commander to pull back from him.
Left
unprotected, Uriah is killed
Bathsheba
mourns. When her morning is over,
David
takes her to be his wife.
And
the thing has displeased the lord.
God
sends Nathan the prophet to david
Nathans
story
Read
2 Samuel 12:1-6
12 The Lord sent Nathan to
David. When he came to him, he said, “There were two men in a certain town, one
rich and the other poor. 2 The rich man
had a very large number of sheep and cattle, 3 but
the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised
it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from
his cup and even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him.
4 “Now
a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of
his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him.
Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for
the one who had come to him.”
5 David
burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan, “As surely as the Lord lives, the man who
did this must die! 6 He must
pay for that lamb four times over, because he did such a thing and had no
pity.”
Nathan
then said, to him…. You are the man.
The
lord has made you king
He
has caused you to win many battles
He
has given you man wives.
What
did you do?
You
thought you were all that.
You
took someone else’s wife.
You
had the man killed.
You
tried to cover it all up.
David
said, I have sinned against the lord.
How
long does it take for David to recognize himself in Nathan’s story?
Quiet
And
now David who was on the top of the world, is on the bottom.
He
is broken and he feels like a real loser.
It is at this time that he writes………
Psalm
51
10 Create in me a pure
heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
There are consequences to David – two
fold
First
there is to be fighting among his family
Any
of us that have experienced this knows how painful it is.
Secondly
the bible says that because of his actions, the baby will die.
I
don’t believe that god kills babies of people that sin
If
that were true, all babies would die.
I
believe that this is what they believed – many people believe that god hurts
sinners
Jerry
Falwell said that Katrina hit new Orleans because of their sin
I
don’t believe that God hurts babies.
I
believe that god loves all babies very much
Back to repentance
David was sincere
Sincerity
is so important
People
ask me about their Christian decisions. Did I do it right? Were you
sincere?
Sincerity Is missing in Modern day
Celebrity apologies
Paula
Deen, Mel Gibson, Jimmy Swaggart, tiger woods
They
seem shallow to us because they are
Is
it wrong of me to say that?
I
think we can tell when someone is sincere
To offer an apology or to accept an
apology is to
Complete
a relationship it is to Resolve a relationship
Broken
relationships are painful. Many of us carry them throughout life.
We don’t have to
Offer
forgiveness to others – keep working on it
Don’t
be afraid to Apologize when you need to
To offer an apology or to accept an
apology is to
Complete
a relationship it is to Resolve a relationship
Elements of true confession and
repentance
Awareness
– admitting it
Sorrow
- David is cut to the heart
God be merciful to me a sinner
[the Pharisee and the publican]
Asking
for forgiveness - Clean me up & restore me
Making
a decision to change
David’s story is an amazing story of
forgiveness
We
could talk about forgiveness every Sunday for a year
This
is an amazing story of forgiveness
It
is a miracle
To
be forgiven is a miracle
It
is the greatest gift
Staff retreat last week
Brains
Swanson testimony
I
went to a church that was dead
May
it never be said about woods chapel
As long as we are holding up
grace and forgiveness, the spirit is alive
Hear
and receive gods miracle of forgiveness today
God
hears you
God
holds you
God
loves you
Forgiveness
is available.
It’s
the joy. It’s the hope. It’s the good news
