Sermon 2-21-2010 Communion - Scripture: 1 Cor 11:17-29
17In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good. 18In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it. 19No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God's approval. 20When you come together, it is not the Lord's Supper you eat, 21for as you eat, each of you goes ahead without waiting for anybody else. One remains hungry, another gets drunk. 22Don't you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you for this? Certainly not!
23For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." 25In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." 26For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.
27Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. 29For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.
Today we begin the last 24 hours of jesus life. 24 hours that changed the world
Part one- the last supper
Later in the service today, we will be celebrating holy communion, I want to get some of the Mechanics out of the way.
The early church had some problems, we have a few of our own as well
the mechanics of communion at WCC
• just going thru the motions-here little cup
• nothing besides worry too much
• what is that guy doing here?
• Have I been here long enough?
• Get drunk
• Our appearance
• Our shoes
what to say-kneel, or not
where to put the cups
DO I have to be worthy? [God be merciful to me a sinner] Pharisee & publican
When do give communion to children
I was raised in the Lutheran church, 1st communion at confirmation
Other churches see is a a family thing. The meal of God, for all.
When our kids were old enough to explain what it meant, they came
So Jesus is gathered around with his disciples…
What are the themes/topics of discussion at the supper
Love, Unity, [a new commandment I give unto you…]
he predicts judas betrayal and peters denial.
He comforts them. Many mansions, comforter is coming.
servanthood [foot washing], , sacrifice, perseverance
what does all of that mean for us as we participate in the last supper?
Symbolic, memorial, Remembrance- proclaim the lords death
For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. 1 Corinthians 11:26
We normally don’t run around talking about the death of a person
But something happened in Jesus death
The price for forgiveness of sins was paid
Proclaim means that We can have a joyful, celebratory life with God
It is more than a remembrance, a memorial, Real presence- comfort- rest
All of us have felt beat up, beat down, accused, hurt, maligned, etc
Come unto me all ye that are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest mt. 11:28

Holy Communion is Means of grace- strength, food, power
Sacred, Salvific,
There are Future aspects to the last supper- Community
Mark 14:25"I tell you the truth, I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it anew in the kingdom of God."
The Lords supper is ultimately outward focused
It sends us out- it is Bread for the journey
Jesus said-I am the bread of life he who comes to me will never hunger, he who believes in me will never thirst…..
The spiritual food. The manna from heaven –eat my flesh and drink my blood
we find spiritual strength and sustenance and we go out
Mass- Est en missen--you are sent
Do “this” and remember me.
What is this?
The cup and the little chip…..
Do this what? Chip and cup? Gather for a dinner?
I am broken. I am poured out. Do this and remember me
Do this life of sacrifice. Do this giving of yourself away
As you see me do, so you do, and when you do this,
live this way, remember me.
and so this supper is a quite significant moment-
where jesus commissions his followers
and invites them to follow him in a life of sacrifice and love.
Do this. ?This what? - this life of sacrifice, this giving one’s self away,
this becoming brokenness, this washing of each others feet,
this loving of one another……….and so remember me.
this is my last supper,
and these are my last thoughts with you my friends,
until we meet again in the kingdom of heaven.
