Easter Sermon 4-8-2007 John 20:1-18
Are you looking for something good today?
The good things of life
Membership at Costco = $49.99 polish dog & a coke at Costco 1.50
Being wished happy Easter by the gal at the deli = priceless
There are somethings in life that are just good.
Opening day at the K
It’s a great day, a day everyone loves-most coveted ticket
It marks the arrival of spring
It reminds us of the presence of an important institution, baseball
Every seat is filled, it is standing room only
Lots of blue hats are dusted off on this day, only to return to the closet later that night to wait for next year’s opening day
They said it was REO Speed wagon singing the national anthem, but I am sure it was really REO speedwagon’s grandparents.
There was a fly by- by the b-2 stealth bomber
Awesome…..”glad those guys are on our side”
Are you looking for something today? Easter at WCC
It’s a great day…..a day everyone loves----It marks the arrival of spring
It reminds us of the presence of an important institution, the person of Jesus Christ.
Every seat is filled, it is standing room only.
Lots of new dresses, shoes and hats appear today, only to find their way back to the closet until next year.
Yes, opening day at the k is a high point for the royals and
Easter at WCC is a highpoint in the church year
There is a difference between Human Good/godly good
Everyone knows that baseball is only a game
Albert Pujols….friend on the tigers……after 1st game of world series
· “I will not always play baseball, he will always be my friend.”
“I try to spend as much time as possible with God and my family. That’s more important than anything I’m doing in baseball.”
No one sits in church and prays to their baseball team
Many people sit in major league stadiums and asked for the help of the lord Jesus Christ.
What r the good things, how do we find meaning & purpose? Hope and joy?
I have played baseball, I had ridden motorcycles, I have engaged in dangerous behavior. Been to cocoa beach, taken a cruise road the cable cars in San Francisco
Every day we are alive we have a chance to set priorities to choose the good,
if we don’t Life has a way of reminding us of what is important
The troubled times of life are a great equalizer. They remind us that hope does not come via money, fame, good works or good looks.
You know what I am talking about when I speak of those troubled times. Moments of decision. Tension is in the air. Someone is sick. Someone loses a job. I feel alone and sad. My debts have caught up with me. Problems in relationships…..These all take us to moments of need.
Like it s the bottom of the ninth inning, there are two outs…..hope is running out
on opening day we had a moment like that, there are men on base, Alex Gordon comes to the plate for his first major league at bat.
Everyone waits with great anticipation to see what will happen
The greatest moments of tension in the history of the world took place
On Friday evening Jesus died. Friday evening, Saturday all day and Sunday morning, all of creation is on point.
There is tension in the air.
In the arena of life
Everyone is waiting with great anticipation to see what will happen.
At the appointed time, Angels appear to roll back the stone.
The soldiers guarding the tomb fall down like dead men
All of creation rises to its feet
The power of the Holy Spirit raises Jesus to life
And he steps out into the morning air in a blaze of glory.
In the stands of creation, there is celebration like no other. Never before, never since.
In heaven they worship every day…..the easter celebrations must be great…..
Can you imagine the angelic fly by……awesome, amazing
Captured by the thought….every knee shall bow every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord
What happened on that first Easter Sunday morning is the most significant event in the history of the world.
Let me tell you what the resurrection of Jesus means to us.
1. God is triumphant over sin, evil and death
Your sins can be forgiven. You can find peace with God.
Grace triumphs over condemnation
If you are a Christian you can walk in confidence with God’s presence and power at work in your life. One step at a time, the gracious God will and can work in your life to help you fulfill your potential.
In him you can begin to understand your life’s purpose
2. Jesus teaching is validated
The power of servant hood of Turning the other cheek, washing others feet
The freedom of forgiveness---Father forgive them
If you have a gift to bring, first go forgive your brother, then offer gift
The all sufficiency of love
A new commandment I give unto you, love one another as I have loved
At royals stadium when someone hits a homer, everyone cheers and rockets are shot into the sky…..the applause lasts until the person rounds the bases.
At Easter- we Christians should rise to our feet and cheer the God who has done the impossible, the amazing. We should shoot off rockets and offer praise the rest of our lives, until we make it to our heavenly home.
Easter surely is a time to remember that which is truly Good.
Praise God for the victory that he gives us thru our Lord Jesus Christ.
