The Lords Prayer...Part one Matthew 6:5-15

Sermon The Lords Prayer...Part One Matthew6:5-15

Will I be able to realte to what they talk about at church today?
  • Beyond the world of rituals, give me something that I can understand
  • Everyone relates to the Lords prayer
  • Let us learn to speak it with meaning, not simply to recite it
General Thoughts
In Luke Jesus disciples asked...Lord, "Teach us how to pray."
  • He answered by teaching them the prayer we call the Lord's Prayer
  • the Lord's Prayer is a basic Christian prayer
  • As a model of prayer, every Christian learns it by heart
  • it appears everywhere in the church's life; in it liturgy and sacraments, in public and private prayer
  • It's a prayer Christians treasure.
Our Father...we are his children [catch this later]
Describes our relationship to him, not him
not masculine...mysterious...holy...

6Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near.
7Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts.
Let him turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him,
and to our God, for he will freely pardon.
8"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,"
declares the Lord.
9 "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my
thoughts than your thoughts.

Ernest Hemingway writes about a Spanish father and son with a shattered relationship. But when the rebellious son ran away, the father placed an ad in the paper saying, "Paco, Please meet me in front of the newspaper office at noon. All is forgiven. Love, Father." He was amazed the next day when 800 sons, al named Paco, showed up seeking reconciliation with their fathers.

Our father...we have a place to belong...

this is not just the Lord's Prayer, this is our prayer
This is a prayer that everyone can learn and every one can know and everyone can use.
