Sermon 10-28-01 Isaiah 2:1-5 Looking for a day when
Remember when you wanted to be 16 so you could drive?
18 so you could vote
21 so you could go all of those places.
I remember when I was young thinking that I would be 42 at the turn of the
Century. It seemed so far off.
A yearning is ………..
In the Christian tradition there is a great history of yearning
Hannah – yearning for a child
Paul – longing to see his Christian friends
Heart of the Christian, longing for redemption
Hoping for the day when God's reign would be established
Most noticed and experienced by those who are being oppressed
No trouble, no longing, no yearning
Slaves in pre civil war America, wished for the day
Music illustrates their yearnings
Folks not in trauma usually don’t yearn much…things are good
See yearning as "pie in the sky" type of thinking
IN the Christian tradition there is an understanding of the K of God,
Gods rule both as a here and now
And as a future event yet to be when Jesus returns
Isaiah looks to the day when
People will worship God - No more war
What are the longings of your heart?
Do we yearn for these things because we want the reign of God
Or because we want things to go back like they were
We want to be in control
Editorial
Worried about our kids - Kids are ok
They are used to not being in control
Let us yearn not for a,b,c or d
But for the reign of god in our world
There is a heaven on earth
I see it here, there
From time to time
Its what we work toward its why we put out effort in this life
Today I am looking for a day when
There is no more war
There is no more anthrax
There is no more hatred
What are you yearning for?
I declare to you today
The kingdom of God
His rule in your life
I pray that you will yearn to know him and walk with him
