24 Hours: The Crucifixion Mark 15:21-39 03/28/10

Sermon 3-28-2010 Mk 15:21-39 24 hours-the crucifixion ffff

21A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross. 22They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull). 23Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. 24And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get. 25It was the third hour when they crucified him. 26The written notice of the charge against him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS. 27They crucified two robbers with him, one on his right and one on his left.[a] 29Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, "So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, 30come down from the cross and save yourself!" 31In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. "He saved others," they said, "but he can't save himself! 32Let this Christ,[b] this King of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe." Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
33At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"—which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"[c] 35When some of those standing near heard this, they said, "Listen, he's calling Elijah." 36One man ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. "Now leave him alone. Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down," he said. 37With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. 38The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. 39And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, heard his cry and[d] saw how he died, he said, "Surely this man was the Son[e] of God!"

Today is Palm Sunday. Themes

Today we are not talking palm Sunday The series
Today, part 5 in the 24 hours series-
We saw Jesus at the last supper, in the garden, before the religious leaders, before Pilate. humiliated and tortured - Today, the crucifixion.

Crucifixion as a topic
For 14 years I gave this sermon on crucifixion
The pain of the suffering.-So difficult, so painful.
Many of you said, continue. We need to hear it.
Yes we do, but I just cant right now

Last year at lent
Last year we had 40 days of love during lent
Sent cards to each other – do it again

Still I am not ready to do this

So knowing that this topic is coming, I have been Asking God, how to do I this.
Sitting at he pool. Big party. Music, happy, no worries. Picture perfect of no problems. What does the crucifixion mean to them?

Pictures of humans with no worries. On a honey moon. On a ski trip. Out with friends at Houlihans. Hoisting one up. Celebrating life.
What does crucifixion mean to them?

No one has no problems. No one is always happy. Every now and then, everyone comes to the end of themselves.

Peggy Lee Lyrics
Is that all there is, is that all there is
If that's all there is my friends, then let's keep dancing
Let's break out the booze and have a ball
If that's all there is

When you come to the end of yourself, the crucifixion has a msg Crucifixion as an a mathematic equation
You come to the point of being in need. You see that someone has helped you. Covered for you. Paid the debt for you.

There is the sense of a debt is paid. The punishment for sin has been satisfied. The scripture points to this repeatedly.

We have learned words like:
Disobedience, condemnation, law, sin, separation,
But at some point, a person may grow weary of
seeing life as a payment owed, something due. Measuring this. Measuring that. Is there something else.

Equation 1000 > -4

Dan Horn’s blog post
You can remember not keep score...you can get even....but don't keep score......that is when a friendship becomes one based on expectation and soon dies.

Maybe there is something else

Story of david and Kyle and the plane ride.
They did not do this so that we would feel guilty, or owe them
They did this because they love us

Mother and child
Mothers bear children in grief and sorrow
What if this was all you were allowed to think of?

What did Mary see? John? The centurion
john 19 26 when Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your son," 27and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

Everyone understands substitution
At some point you need to see and accept the gift of his sacrifice
Do we dare think that God’s purpose would be that we would forever be stuck in an iou relationship
Get past that and see the love

The prodigal son did not come home to, “boy are you really going to owe me now!”

Crucifixion as love
Yes. There is the awareness of love.
A viewing of why the person did this. They loved me this much. There is an overwhelming sense of love.
I am loved. Look what they did.

Romans 5 8But God commended his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

The message of the crucifixion is God so loved the world

If you find a time where you have come to the end of yourself, remember that the crucifixion is not just a reminder that Jesus did for us what we could not do. It is a message of God’s great and wonderful love.
