Waiting for God to Act Luke 2 12-29-02

Luke 2 Simeon 12-29-02

We don’t like to wait
Go for fast food, don’t want to wait in line/don’t like waiting for christmas
Best part of vacation is planning it

Waiting for God to act
Simeon…waited a lifetime
1. ritual circumcision
2. dedication of newborn, sac two doves
3. purification of mothers after giving birth
4. appearance of the savior of the world
[he did this once, we can do it anytime we choose]

simeon waited…..applied himself….Celebrated…was ready to go
we waited, it came, it went,
So christmas is here, now its gone…life goes on for us
Its over, it stinks

A number of years ago, when Lou Holtz was at the University of Arkansas, he was taking his team to play a bowl game in Tempe, Arizona. The game was to be played on Christmas day. He was asked how he felt about playing a game on Christmas, rather than being with his family. The coach answered candidly: "I would rather be in Tempe. After all, once you have been to church, had Christmas dinner, and opened the presents, Christmas is the most boring day of the year."

So what is the problem???????????
Kids are bored, were bored/why
Why did other generations find satisfaction in life?

Living Without Hoperadio show…. Tom Brokaw's wonderful book The GreatestGeneration,

taken the position that the current generation of young adults, those in their 20's, are, for the most part, a bunch of whiners. He saidthat while they are constantly whining and moaning about the difficulty oftheir lives in fact, when compared to the hardships faced by theirgrandparents' generation, they've actually got it easy. Their grandparentshad endured truly devastating events like The Great Depression and WWII.The current crop of young adults, he concluded, doesn't even have a clueabout real hardship.caller rebuts Depression and WWII certainly created terrible hardships for the people whofaced them that he, nonetheless, believed his generation faced an evengreater hardship. The caller said, "The loss of hope." He said that his experience indicatedthat many of today's young adults had simply stopped believing that thingswere going to get better. They didn't expect to live as well as theirparents had lived. They weren't expecting a brighter future. They havesimply given up hope.He said, The Great Depression, as terrible as it was, in many cases broughtfamilies together as they worked side by side in the hope of saving theirfamilies. Most of his friends, he said, grew up in families in completedisarray and have given up the hope of ever having a real family experienceof their own.He said, WWII was a terrible event that obviously cost thousands of Americas' young men their lives. Then he said, and even though they knew the risksthey still enlisted voluntarily by the millions because they saw it as acause worth dying for. Most of those in his generation, he said, can'timagine anything worth dying for and they're committing suicide in recordnumbers because many can't imagine anything worth living for. The Great Depression and WWII created terriblehardships. But I submit to you that the greatest hardship of all is livingwithout hope."

Do we hope in circumstances or in god??????
Center in the god, not the event
The Jesus StoreOne day a woman went shopping at the mall. She wassurprised to see Jesus behind the counter. She knew it was Jesus because helooked just like the paintings she'd seen in museums and in devotionalbooks. Finally she got up her nerve and asked, "Excuse me, but are youJesus?" "I am." "Do you work here?" "In a way; I own the store." "Oh, whatdo you sell here?" "Just about everything," Jesus replied. "Feel free towalk up and down the aisles, make a list, see what it is you want, and thencome back and I'll see what I can do for you."Well, she did just that. She walked up and down the aisles, writingfuriously. There was peace on earth, no more war, no hunger or poverty. There was peace in families, harmony, no dissension, no more drugs. Therecareful use of resources. By the time she got back to the counter, she had along list. Jesus looked over the list, then smiled at her and said, "Noproblem." And then he bent down behind the counter and picked out all sortsof things, and finally stood up, and laid out the packets on the counter."What are these?" the woman asked. "Seed packets," Jesus answered. "This isa catalog store." "You mean I don't get the finished product?" "No, this isa place of dreams. You come and see what it looks like, and I give you theseeds. You go home and plant the seeds. You water them and nurture them andhelp them to grow, and someday someone else reaps the benefits."

Stop waiting, you are not going to win the lottery
Your ship is not going to come in.
Its all already here if you know Jesus…..
The Inner Peace Virus Some signs and symptoms of inner peace virus:+ An unmistakable ability to enjoy each moment.+ A loss of interest in judging other people.+ A loss of interest in interpreting the actions of others.+ A loss of interest in conflict.+ A loss of the ability to worry. (This is a very serious symptom.)+ Frequent, overwhelming episodes of appreciation.+ Contented feelings of connectedness with others and nature.+ Frequent attacks of smiling.+ An increasing tendency to let things happen rather than make them happen.+ An increased susceptibility to the love extended by others as well as theuncontrollable urge to extend it.
There is nothing more to wait for
The savior is here
Find joy in him
