Shepherds - dirty jobs Luke 2:8-14 12-4-05

Sermon 12-04-05 Luke 2:8-14 Shepherds- dirty Jobs

New Tv show…….dirty jobs…seen it? Watched all of it?

Dirtiest job I ever did….plumbing under house in bixby
Sick to stomach….clothes in trash…..yeuch!!

Worst you ever felt about yourself? Don’t belong, I don’t matter, rejected, unloved, everyone else matters but me, On the plate of life I am the parsley.

This is the world of the shepherd.
Living in the fields….in tents, in the open, not a part of normal, clean society.
Alone, rejected, chided, cold, questioned their purpose

Lowest social stratum….with tax collectors and dung sweepers
Rift between farmers and shepherds Cain & Able
Accepted in early jewish history, set aside after Egypt
Became in illustration of how far someone had come….Amos, David
Some rabbis questioned ps 23….the Lord is my shepherd
Rabbis banned shepherding except in desert areas
According to jewish law, no one required to help a shepherd fallen into a pit

1st ones to hear
Goodwill to men
Goodwill to men upon whom the Lords favor rests

Worst you ever felt about yourself? Don’t belong, I don’t matter, rejected, unloved, everyone else matters but me, On the plate of life I am the parsley.

There is a giant contradiction in the Christmas story
Oxymoron….jumbo shrimp
Giant contradiction….to everything that the world calls important, power, prestiege, fame, money……..God says humbug
To the lowliest, to the humble, to those who are struggling God says
Peace on earth, good will to men and women upon who my favor rests and that begins with you.

Cant find anything to celebrate about?
