Sermon 3-4-07 Lent 2-atonement Romans 3:21-25
21But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement,[i] through faith in his blood.
Mardi Gras
Fat Tuesday……the day before ash wed….a big party….
No one has any fun during Lent………
All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God
What is the worst thing that you have ever done?
What is your biggest sin, what is your biggest secret?
Sins of commission, sins of omission
Sometimes people say, O, God is punishing me for my sins
If we got what we deserve, none of us would be here.
Do you think you can bear the burden of your sin?
When there is an atonement to make, God does not expect you to bear the burden of your sin. He calls on the name of his son.
How would you atone for your sin?
There is a righteousness from God that comes thru faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.
You cant be good enough
Don’t talk to me about
· How good you are
· How smart you are….doctrine
· your preference or
· church traditions
· I don’t need for you to tell me about how people really should be baptized [as if at the pearly gates…..],
· denomination of your choice, or
· the latest fad about the 2nd coming.
I want to remind you about the Essentials of faith
What are the essentials of faith
1, 2, 3, 4, 5,
every Christian should be able to articulate something close to this.
This atonement, [Atonement….at one ment….. ] this making right, this reconciliation happens thru Jesus Christ, but how?
Theories of the atonement
1. ranson theory
Origen 185-254
The theory teaches that the death of Christ was a ransom, usually said to have been paid to Satan, in satisfaction of his just claim on the souls of humanity as a result of sin
Rejected:
· we do not live in a dualistic world.
· Satan is not the opposite of God,
· This theory is not a Biblical world view.
2. exemplary theory
Peter Abelard 1079-1142
Christs death is an inspiriting appeal of love that evokes in the sinner a response of love, thus removing the sin. Jesus loved this much, you follow his example in loving and your sin is forgiven.
Rejected: We are saved by faith in Christ, not good works.
If we were saved by works, none of us could be good enough.
3. substitution theory
St Anselm 1033-1109
Jesus Christ took our place on the cross. He who knew no sin became sin for us so that we might become the righteousness of God thru him.
He paid a debt he did not owe, I owed a debt I could not pay, I needed someone to was my sins away, and now I sing a brand new song, Amazing grace, Christ Jesus paid the debt that I could never pay.
Years ago, a church family bought our dinner at Habaneros
It is a funny feeling to have someone else do something for you.
I asked you earlier, what is the biggest sin that you ever committed?
Now I ask
What is the nicest thing that has ever been done for you?
1. my parents paid for me to go to college
2. my wife loves me
3. God has forgiven my sins
Today we come to the table of the Lord
Wesley = Holy communion is salvific
The Wesleyan tradition has always recognized that Holy Communion may be an occasion for the reception of converting, justifying, and sanctifying grace.”
That means that right here at this table to day, you can be converted, justified, changed
when people realize what was done for them, they are touched to the core.
At the point where your worst sin contacts the grace of God, his pardon rushes over you, and you are washed white as snow.
Jesus Christ has atoned for your sin, he has paid the price
You can receive this forgiveness right now
Affirm it
Acknowledge it
Think about it until later
Visit w god later in the most quiet, personal and holy moments of your life.
Or You can choose him today
As he offers himself to you freely in the lords supper, so you can offer yourself to him
