The amazing power that we have to hurt or heal, by what comes out of our mouth

You can always control your mouth.
But it isn’t easy……..James makes that clear

James 3: 1Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. 2We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check.

I wonder if James had trouble with his mouth?

3When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.
7All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, 8but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
9With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. 10Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.

If you have trouble with what comes out of your mouth, take the advice of my high school French teacher--Mrs rosenburg in French…ferme la bouch

Dad……son you don’t know when to keep your mouth shut.
I didn’t know what he meant.
It doesn’t matter sometimes who is right, or how just you think your cause is

Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh

The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks. Luke 6:45

I said that you can control your mouth-its just not easy……
You cant always control your heart. You have to train your heart.

There are many kinds of troubled hearts
the resentful heart

Second thoughts. Hew as a pastor. I am sure he had many good qualities
I should not allow my mind to be filled with negative thoughts

Don’t take joy in the downfall of your enemies
Prov 24:17-18

17 Do not gloat when your enemy falls; when he stumbles, do not let your heart rejoice, 18 or the LORD will see and disapprove

another troubled heart is the angry heart

the world does not revolve around me…..the world is just not aligning itself to suit me.

% of day spent in joy & grace. % of your day spent in anger and negativity.
Do you think you’re fun to be with when every word of your mouth is negtive

James 3:13Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. 16For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.
17But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. 18Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.

Another troubled heart is the wandering heart

You don’t just wake up one day and say,
hey I am gonna do something really bad
You put yourself into a position a little bit at a time
Until you excuse bad behavior….until it almost seems normal to you

Close
There are consequences to taking in bad attitudes.
A misguided heart will poison your soul

Phil 4: 8Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. 9Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.

We all want the god of peace, fact is we complain when he seems far away, but what are we thinking about….what are we filling our heart and minds with

Let the words of my mouth, the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight.
