Who Are You A Servant To? 1 Corinthians 9:19-27 8-29-04

Sermon 8-29-04 1 cor 9:19-27

Who are you a servant to?
Look at how Paul gives himself away to a cause
I reach out to all kinds of people, who are not like me
If you love those who love you, what reward to you have
Mt 5 46If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?

There is a race in life, and we must take it seriously
No guilt here, set this on shelf if you are not ready or if you’ve been beat to death
What kind of effort are we putting in? just a question
880 track man/first to worst
start off strong, run out of gas
in marriage, in work place, for Kingdom of God

training
man who described his early morning calisthenics in this fashion: "I have to talk to myself when I awaken. I say -- 'Ready, now. Up -- down, up -- down.' After two strenuous minutes I tell myself: 'O.K. Now -- try the other eyelid."'
apply what we hear to life
smalley seminar….a few nuggets
just think what we would be if we applied the few
hated training -------wanted to quit

ways to quit
suicide
wont keep you from heaven
will deliver more hurt than you know now
apricot hill-just stop trying-disengage

Many races in the track meet of life
we can step up to a challenge
1130 to 850 mile
training by quarters 110s -the final stretch
Whitfield quote “I am never better than when I am on the final stretch for God”

Very famous carving in the west door of the church at Staunton Harold in Leicestershire:In the yeare 1653, When all things sacred were throughout ye nationEither demolisht or profanedSir Robert Shirley, Barronet,Founded this church; Whose singular praise it is, to haue done the best things in ye worst time, and to have hoped for them in the day of callamity
In the final stretch of todays race….what effort to you have to give to God
Do you ever wonder if you are going to make it? I keep letting people down
Being a Christian is not easy, it means giving all that you know of yourself, to all that you know of God
Do your best I am committed to something that is bigger than myself. We cannot shrink back and our cause cannot fail.
