Thomas, Doubting and Scars 4-10-05

Sermon 4-10-05 Thomas, doubting and scars

3 years old, didn’t want to take a nap…ran from Dad….slit bridge of nose open on bed frame

The Scars Give You Away-Odysseus… there is an episode in Homers odyssey when Odysseus finally returns home after years of wandering. But he is disguised as an old man; nobody recognizes him at home, not evenhis wife Penelope and their son. That night, just before bed, Odysseus' aged nurse Eurycleia washes his feet. She thinks she is merely attending to an old stranger who is visiting for the night. But, as she begins to wash him, the old nurse recognizes a scar on Odysseus' thigh, the same scar she remembers from his youth. At that moment she realizes who he is.

Even when you cant see them, they effect you

scars mark us
they tell us a bit of who we are

we don’t like scars,
we can pay money to have them removed.
Here comes Jesus showing his scars

You have scars
· Julie and dad at age 12
· Divorce
· Churches give scars
Good news: your scars are ok.
If God can have scars then maybe I can too

The scar of doubt
Everybody has doubts
Its not just Thomas….they are running scared
Doubts are the ants in the pants of faith. They keep it awake and moving.Frederick Buechner

Good news
The friends bring Thomas into the loop-remind him about Jesus
This could have been dangerous
Come and see

To what extent have you gone to save another, to reach a friend
· We have the responsibility to help our friends find Jesus
· Not just for the pastor, not just for Stephen ministers
· Mark 2
Jesus Heals a Paralytic
1A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. 2So many gathered that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. 3Some men came, bringing to him a paralytic, carried by four of them. 4Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and, after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on. 5When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

The paralyzed man is brought by his friends.
· Would you go out of your way for this person?
· 1 john 3: 16This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. 17If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? 18Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.
Jesus sees the faith in them

We must remind our friends that we are not the scar-less, but we are those whose wound have been healed by the one who still show you his scars

If Jesus was here today and he showed you his hands, what would you see

The scars tell us of a tree, of a cross, of a sacrificial death
The scars tell us of a love that has paid the price
The time of pain is over, the time of healing has come
See my hands, see my side….believe in me
