Roots and Wings John 15 Sermon 4-23-06
Easter over……….once you get past crowds,
u can enjoy the growth, the coming to life
400 tulips on the church grounds, hosta bed on n side
Jesus taught many Lessons from things that grow:
1. As much of the tree is underground as is above the ground
-the greater part of a person you will not meet in the first 30 minutes
-friendships are developed over time
2. Winter-Nothing is growing on top, the roots are running down.
-in the winter, things appear to be dead, but the roots are still growing deep under ground
-look at your kids…..think nothing is going on, they are learning, thinking
3. there is latent life in growing things
-get it in the right soil and it will grow
-2 year old daffodil bulbs
4. If you keep them well watered, the roots will stay on the top, and never go deep
-drought brings some deep growth
-we go seeking answers in times of drought
4. Pruning is needed
runaway growth in grape vines………result……no fruit
-overly idealistic……
-suffering brings seasoning, seasoning brings wisdom
5. Bearing fruit….nothing happening in your life…..
Notice the great oak.
in springtime because it is still covered with the scruffy, scraggly leaves
When all the other trees have lost their leaves,
the oak's tatters hang on stubbornly through all the gales of winter.
It is only in the spring, when the sap begins to rise again,
that the tree finally lets go
old vestiges of past life drop off when the signal comes that new life is about to begin.
If life is not working for you, time to try something new……..
In Jesus we can learn
it is not about me……love, joy peace, giving yourself away
If you want to fly, you have to have roots that sink down deeply into the ground
california’s inyou forest…some of the worlds oldest trees….bristlecone pines…..methusala trees…..4,600 years old. Secret…..extensive roots
The tree in the backyard at lebanon
Conclusion
So Jesus says, I am the vine, you are the branches…….Stay connected to Jesus.
Going to church isn’t necessarity Christ centered
Bible study can be an end in itself
Prayer can be selfish
How much time are you spending in your life talking to Jesus.
Sink your roots down deep in him and experience a joyful, fruitful life
