Mission Opportunities Matthew 28:16-20 1-21-07

Sermon Mt 28:16-20 1-21-07
Mt 28:16-20 16Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
What did Jesus mean when he said these words?
We cant just hang around and enjoy the Christian life
We are asked to go
Not everyone can go, but we should send some

His words mean that Life is meant to be lived outside of ones self….mission

Many mission opportunities at Wcc
They are all good…..name some
Russia orphanage, ARF, Foster kids, Ronald McDonald house, Habitat, prom dress program, food pantry, Westport, heffier project,
They are all good

Today I want to talk about a new program.
This is not for everyone, but here goes

This has been on my heart for some time. the idea to send people into the missions field for 30 days-recurring connecting following trips
a. better, more ongoing relationship with the site
b. better coordination of supplies and follow up delivery
c. life changing for the people who go
d. heart warming for our church
1. the general church sends missionaries do any of you know them?
2. now you will know them personally
3. we will make road trips

Areas Targeted
Gulf Coast area recovering from Katrina
Guatemala or other mission in this hemisphere [4:00 meeting today]
15 people going to Guatemala this summer
system in place to receive long term volunteers
reasonable flight costs and per deim. Some have asked if
Other places…….sure, if we can send people one after the other for 30 day visits and It is affordable

Today I want to talk to you about the gulf area
In 2005 after hurricane Katrina, we filled trucks w items for the needy
We have sent several work teams down
This is still a disaster without precedence in US history
The workers are exhausted.
There is still much work to do.
Will be in recovery mode 10-15 years

I was in new Orleans 2 weeks ago
show ppt show

How this missions deployment would it work
Applica process, lots of paperwork, medical issues, insurance issues
church would pay for travel, you are responsible for the per diem.
Live out the job description
Regular communications home

what do we need to make this dream a reality
a. money- raised 50,000 in an endowment
b. place to go
c. administrative structure in place- forms, contact people, systems to deploy people
d. volunteers to go

Today I am inviting you to consider going into the mission field for 30 days

Conclusion-
We go for 7-10 day trips
We send money…….is that enough
Fulfilling our potential answering our call

In 2000 we sent our first people over seas on 10 day mission trips.
Now it is common place. Russia, Mozambique, Uganda, Guatemala

I hope that in 5 years, this idea will seem common place….
30 days, yes we do that

This is the largest commitment that I have ever asked of a congregation.
There is a Guatemala meeting today at 400
There is an organizational meeting re 30 day trips in general tonight at 630 in the library.

It has been 17 months since hurricane Katrina.
It is so easy to forget…& put it on the back burner….go on w lives

what you can do
a. go
b. give
c. pray
d. tell others

Man in Macedonia…..come on over here
Acts 16 6Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia. 7When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to. 8So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas. 9During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, "Come over to Macedonia and help us." 10After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

Today I want you to know that
