Sermon Mt 16: Lent Begins Who do u say that I am? 2-25-01
Wed I got in the car and drove 600 miles to Cincinnati.
Long journeys are good times to think.
Today as lent begins
Jesus begins journey, turning point, take him to cross [heart of disciples]
It begins at Cesarea Phillipi
Trees, brook, roman idol
Peaceful place, poor mans Bahamas, riviera
Down thru Galilee into Jerusalem
Up to this point, peaceful ministry
Miracles, teaching, love
Now he asks some pointed questions
Who do others say that I am? Who do you say that I am?
Wins it…you are the Christ
There is uniqueness to the Christian message
Upon this rock I will build my church
We are drawing a line
It is time to engage the battle
I am going to Jerusalem to suffer and die….What????? Say it isn't so
Peter, chokes, get thee behind me
Everyone wants to be in the army, until its time for war
Jesus is about to engage in a battle
It will call for the best in his followers
Character, honor, integrity, commitment to the cause
Faith in Christ is not a game….a superficial following
It is not a bumper sticker on your car or a cross around your neck
Wesley….faith is either in dead earnest or just plain dead
Corrie ten boom….no instructions or excuses, just show up for work
For Jesus a battle lies ahead…for salvation of souls
In times of peace we live peaceably
In times of challenge, great men & women rise to follow a worthy cause
Cross bearing by definition is a burden
Where is your heart? Are you following only for the miracles?
He must suffer and die for the sin of the world
Those who follow must count the cost
Be willing to suffer for the sake of Christ
Who do you say that he is? Who is Jesus to you? R u sold out?
