Experiencing Jesus Part 1 John 3:1-9 11-12-03

Sermon John 3:1-9 Experiencing Jesus Part 1 1-12--03

Pharisee, lead Pharisee….Imagine sudden awareness of “I don’t know it all”

Came at night…don’t tell anyone

We know….who is we?---All reasons to doubt were there yet he believed

You must be born again
Death penalty removed
Fish arm
"One balmy spring morning in Hollywood, a month or so before my 48th birthday, I woke up screaming. I got out of bed, went into the next room, sat down on a couch and screamed again ... It was a response to the reality that another morning had broken in a life I could only deal with sedated by drugs, loud noise, moving images and wired to electronic games that further distracted my fragmented attention from a growing sense of blank, nameless pain in the pit of my very being, my most essential self. ... The day I woke up screaming, I grabbed from among my books an old Bible I hadn't opened for nearly a quarter of a century. With a desperate instinct I turned to the 23rd Psalm and read these words over, several times....”the Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.”

I don’t get it
You won’t get it….its beyond your ability
You can’t try harder to understand

Water smart/cleansing

Powerfully
Mysteriously
As it pleases
He will please, when we have nothing left…..
No beauty, no strength, no money, no pride
Who are strongest Christians??? Older Women of the church

How can this be
Nineteenth century Scottish preacher Horatius Banairr asked 253 Christian friends at what ages they were converted. Here's what he discovered:
Under 20 years of age - 138 Between 20 and 30 - 85 Between 30 and 40 - 22 Between 40 and 50 - 4 Between 50 and 60 - 3 Between 60 and 70 - 1 Over 70 - 0
You are never going to understand it

1 Corinthians 29However, as it is written: "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him"[1] -- 10but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. 11The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.[2] 14The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.
