Building a Foundation Matthew 7 1-23-05

Sermon mt 7 1-23-05

If you built a house by yourself, how long would it take?
I once added a room to a house……very complicated, lots of challenges

There is a plain sense in which we understand this parable….
I always thought it was just about saying the words…making the confession…
House on the rock…..culmination of teachings of sermon on mount
Jesus cuts to the chase
Put it in context…not everyone…..
It’s scary- not everyone who says to me…..
We prophesied In your name-We cast out devils
How do you know if you will make it?
We taught Sunday school, built a building, organized 11 softball teams

Thinking-Doing-Being
Not right thinking
Not good works
= relationships

the change comes when we receive his love and begin to give it away.
Love is the more excellent way
That is a purpose driven life

1 Cor 13…..If I do these things but have not love,
Some in attempting to do well, do well, but know not the source of their
motivation
Others in attempting to do well, rise in righteousness and cut off the body
parts of those whom they would seek to win.

Going to church vs. being a person of faith/love
Going to church should help us to become a person of faith/love
People get burned out in life and in church work because they are not just doing too much, but they are doing too much for the wrong reasons…..
Acts out of duty, acts out of love

Does the church hold us a standard, yes but it is not doctrine, though doctrine is impt, it is not missions, though mission is important, there is one sign that proves that are feet are on solid ground and that is that God s love is being shed abroad in our hearts by the holy spirit

How do you know if you have a solid foundation…..
Is the holy spirit active in your life?
Not based on a certain spiritual gift or……..
Love, the core value
Love motivates us to act but does not put its hopes in actions
Love considers right beliefs, but is not lost in the trivial minutia of a human minds considerations of theology

Are you becoming more loving? Do people see a difference in you?
Are they compelled to come to Jesus because of what comes out of you?
What comes out of you may be authentically human, it may not always be perfect, it may be ornery, but is there a core value of love?

Jn 13 …A new commandment I give unto you.
Be self righteous….make money….be prideful.l
Love one another as I have loved you. By this shall all men know that you are my disciples

What is your life’s work? Building a house.
What does that mean…..
Career? Nice home, retirement?
Your life’s work is to share Gods love, ….it is a great privilege that all Christians are called to this pilgrimage

there is hope for a firm life foundation
why, because one exists…Jesus Christ
No other foundation can be laid than that which is already laid…… 1 cor 3-11

Everything else is sand………..prosperity, career, external profession of religion, self-righteousness, reputation, fame, good works

there is hope for a firm life foundation
why, because you can choose him

you don’t have to know everything
you don’t have to do everything
just understand his love, receive his love
and give yourself away

the storms of life will come……you can be ready
I have seen many people die
Those who know whose they are, die in peace
Those whose life is built on the rock
Find a firm foundation for this life and the peace that passes understanding, even in the darkest valleys of life.

Do you know him. Do you know his love?
